The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

We are seeking a Senior Enterprise Applications / Integration Engineer to support the modernization and sustainment of the Veterans Enrollment System (VES). This role is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting complex system-to-system integrations across critical VA and external platforms.

This position focuses on enterprise application integration, serving as a technical leader responsible for enabling secure, reliable data exchange between VES and numerous enterprise partners, including Oracle EHRM, VistA, VA Profile, VA.gov, MPI/IAM, and external payer systems.

The ideal candidate will possess deep experience designing and supporting enterprise integrations, modern microservices architectures, healthcare or government systems, and highly regulated environments handling sensitive veteran data.

Enterprise Integration Architecture & Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise integration solutions between VES and internal/external partner systems.
  • Build and support RESTful microservices using Java, Spring Boot, and Spring WebFlux.
  • Collaborate with enterprise architects, technical leads, and integration stakeholders to ensure interoperability across platforms.
  • Support bi-directional data exchange between VES and systems such as VistA, Oracle EHRM, VA Profile, VA.gov, MPI/IAM, and Payer EDI platforms.
  • Participate in architectural reviews and technical solution design activities.
  • Manage and sustain production integration interfaces supporting mission-critical veteran enrollment and eligibility services.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve Tier 2/Tier 3 integration issues across distributed systems.
  • Monitor integration performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement improvements to ensure reliability and scalability.
  • Support modernization initiatives while maintaining existing integration capabilities.

Documentation & Governance

  • Develop, maintain, and update Interface Control Documents (ICDs), System Design Documents (SDDs), and other technical artifacts.
  • Ensure all integration changes are documented, tested, reviewed, and approved prior to deployment.
  • Participate in change management and release management activities.
  • Support data migration efforts from legacy platforms to modernized solutions while preserving data integrity.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Establish and maintain relationships with VA integration partners and technical stakeholders.
  • Work closely with integration architects, application development teams, infrastructure teams, and business stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with partner organizations to resolve interface issues and support new integration requirements.
  • Collaborate with technical leadership and government stakeholders to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture standards.

Integration Operations & Sustainment

  • Manage and sustain production integration interfaces supporting mission-critical veteran enrollment and eligibility services.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve Tier 2/Tier 3 integration issues across distributed systems.
  • Monitor integration performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement improvements to ensure reliability and scalability.
  • Support modernization initiatives while maintaining existing integration capabilities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of experience

  • Modernized Technology Stack: Java 17+, Spring Boot, Reactive RESTful Web Service Development with Spring WebFlux, Streams, Kafka, Redis, Oracle database, React/Next.js UI framework, Github, Kubernetes, and Docker. Ensure the stack enhances performance, security, and maintainability.

  • Legacy Technology Stack: MUMPS (VistA), Java Server Pages(JSP), Spring framework, Apache Struts, Hibernate, IBM ODM, Oracle weblogic application server

  • Experience integrating enterprise systems across multiple platforms and environments.

  • Experience troubleshooting complex distributed application and data integration issues.

  • Experience developing and maintaining technical documentation, including ICDs and SDDs.
  • Experience supporting system-to-system integrations in large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Experience with data exchange patterns, messaging systems, API integrations, and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience managing integration interfaces across multiple business partners and stakeholders.

  • Understanding of change management, release management, and production support processes.
  • 2+ years of mentoring and coaching experience; experience with communicating and leading tasking efforts to support delivery

  • Extensive experience with software development, customer interactions, formal and informal communication, and mentorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • General understanding of government contracting requirements and regulations

In support of various state and city equal pay transparency laws, Ad Hoc job descriptions feature the starting range we reasonably expect to pay to candidates who would join our team with little to no need for training on the responsibilities we've outlined above. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and responsibility. The range of starting pay for this role is $135,000 - $160,000.
