The Role
The Enterprise API Architect designs and governs API integration strategies, leveraging AI for automation and ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture practices.
Summary Generated by Built In
The Enterprise API Architect is responsible for ensuring that APIs developed within Healthfirst meet modern integration, automation, and AI-enabled connectivity practices. The role proactively and holistically partners with program delivery leaders to manage architectural runway in support of enterprise initiatives, advancing strategy for API reuse, intelligent automation, integration-platform-as-a-service (iPaaS) adoption, and AI-augmented integration patterns across delivery programs, channels, and B2B ecosystem.
This role leads the advancement of enterprise composability—leveraging modular, domain-aligned components enhanced by AI-driven integration capabilities—to support rapidly evolving business needs. The Enterprise API Architect monitors emerging technology trends, including AI for API lifecycle automation, generative integration, autonomous API testing, and intelligent API governance, to enable future-state business capabilities and processes that drive targeted organizational outcomes.
The role facilitates architectural decisions through a highly collaborative cross-functional architecture governance process, incorporating best practices for API, microservices, event-driven architecture, and iPaaS-based orchestrations, accelerated by AI-enabled insights and tooling.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in designing RESTful APIs aligned with industry best practices, modern integration architectures, and AI-supported design accelerators.
  • Experience with Swagger/OpenAPI specifications and the use of AI-assisted documentation and schema generation tools.
  • Comprehensive understanding of end-to-end API lifecycle (design-time and runtime) within an API gateway, including AI-driven monitoring, anomaly detection, and policy enforcement.
  • Extensive experience designing and securing APIs and protocol-based integrations and working knowledge of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and its use in agent-to-tool or model-to-service architectures.
  • Strong expertise in Identity and Access Management (IAM), including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, mTLS, service identities, and fine-grained authorization models (RBAC, ABAC, policy-based access control)
  • Relevant experience in maintenance and governance of the API lifecycle using API catalog tools with AI-enabled discoverability, impact analysis, and dependency mapping.
  • Experience with REST web services, integration technologies, and iPaaS platforms supporting orchestration, low-code integration, event streaming, and generative integration patterns.
  • Define API strategy centered on business domains and composable architecture principles, incorporating AI-based domain modeling and semantic discovery capabilities.
  • Ensure API design aligns with the enterprise API and domain strategy, including integration of AI governance, security, and compliance frameworks.
  • Define integration patterns (with POCs) for APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, AI workflows, and iPaaS-enabled orchestrations.
  • Define standards for APIs and event specifications, including AI readiness standards and data contracts optimized for machine learning and predictive services.
  • Establish standards for aligning APIs and microservices with enterprise domain strategy and AI-enabled decisioning workflows.
  • Drive API and microservices consolidation to increase reuse, rationalize redundant functionality, and optimize for AI-driven refactoring recommendations.
  • Define and manage the enterprise API landscape, incorporating iPaaS governance, AI driven catalog insights, and automated lifecycle workflows.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, systems analysis, or a related field of study, or equivalent experience.
  • Five or more years of architecture experience in strategic and operations planning and/or business analysis or experience as an enterprise architecture consultant.
  • Five or more years of experience in at least three disciplines, such as business, integration, solution or technical architecture, application development, or data management. Experience with AI-enabled integration platforms or iPaaS environments is advantageous.
  • HS Diploma or GED from an accredited institution

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in the use of enterprise architecture tools and techniques, including AI-augmented architecture modeling, strategic planning, and business model canvas methodologies.
  • Knowledge of interoperability-enabling technologies and platforms such as HL7, FHIR, and X12, with exposure to AI-powered data normalization and mapping capabilities.
  • Deep knowledge of business ecosystems including SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, SOA, APIs, open data, microservices, event-driven IT, predictive analytics, AI services, and iPaaS solutions within the healthcare sector.
  • Comprehensive understanding of health insurance business models, operating models, financial modeling, cost-benefit analysis, budgeting, and risk management, including the role of AI and automation in operational optimization.
  • Expertise in product-centric operating models and scaled agile methodologies, including AI-supported backlog refinement, pattern discovery, and delivery acceleration.
  • Current with emerging technologies and highly capable of integrating them into the business, including AI/ML services, generative AI, integration automation, and autonomous API operations.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills, with proven ability to facilitate enterprise-wide adoption of AI-enabled integration strategies and iPaaS platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate the latest healthcare and AI technology trends into business and architectural strategies to optimize adoption, adaptability, and enterprise value.
