The Engineering Technologist provides technical and engineering services for various ship repair and build support projects at Victoria Shipyards. This role liaises between the technical office and other shipyard departments, ensuring effective communication and resolution of vessel and fabrication shop floor issues.

This is a 12-month limited term employment with eligible benefits and 3 weeks’ vacation. 

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 825 Admirals Road, Victoria.

What you'll do

  • Review customer requirements and develop technical packages, including conceptual designs, 3D models, P&IDs, repair plans, and technical proposals.
  • Provide technical support on assigned projects, partnering with Operations, Production, Estimating, Supply Chain, HSE, and QA teams.
  • Perform engineering calculations in areas such as statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials and fluids, weight control, stability, and electrical systems.
  • Develop engineered design solutions, repair strategies, conversion plans, rigging arrangements, and lifting plans.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including design and production drawings, shop drawings, specifications, work instructions, inspection plans, calculations, and reports.
  • Participate in all phases of ship repair, conversion, and refit projects, including requirements analysis, design development, material selection, execution support, and project close-out.
  • Collect, process, and prepare technical information packages for ship repair projects, including Refit Layouts, P&IDs, Material Cut Lists, Nesting Sheets, and BOMs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical production issues in fabrication shops and onboard vessels.
  • Conduct technical investigations into component or system failures and support the development of corrective actions.
  • Perform inspections, support job execution, and contribute to quality assurance and engineering excellence throughout project delivery.
  • Participate in lessons learned reviews and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance project execution and operational efficiency.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering and production teams to develop practical, safe, and cost-effective solutions that support project objectives.

What you'll bring

  • AScT, PTech, EIT, or P.Eng. designation in a Canadian province is considered an asset.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a marine or engineering environment, such as a shipyard, engineering design office, vessel operations, or maintenance facility.
  • Experience supporting production or operations teams and working within multidisciplinary project environments is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, industrial codes, regulations, and classification society requirements, with the ability to develop designs using rules, codes, and first-principles engineering.
  • Proficiency with CAD software and 3D modeling tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Rhino, SolidWorks, CADMATIC).
  • Knowledge of ship repair, steel or pipe fabrication, welding processes, and marine engineering practices.
  • Familiarity with Classification Society rules (e.g., ABS, DNV, LR) and finite element analysis (FEA) is an asset.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while managing competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to clearly present technical information to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities when resolving technical and operational issues.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • The estimated salary for this position is $78,300 - $95,700. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skills and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
