Description of Work

This Engineering Specialist position will work in Division 13, DDC unit and will assume the duties,
responsibilities of the position including, but not limited to the items listed below:
Data creation and management between field data collectors, design files, and other CAD/GIS
related software. Proficient with various computer software applications such as ORD/Micro-station. Ability to perform moderate physical activities such as walking, climbing, kneeling, hearing, standing, transversing uneven and/or steep terrain. Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle. Collect/Process field surveying data using a wide variety of equipment including but not limited to, Total stations (Robot/Traditional), GPS units, UAV’s, Tripods/Bipods, Prisms/Prism Poles and various hand tools. Perform a wide variety of the most complex and advanced assignments including analyzing, evaluating, computing, editing, and processing higher-level engineering and other survey information. Establish (plan, process, and adjust) or review the creation of project control networks utilizing GPS and/or conventional survey methods. Utilize an extremely wide range of independent decision-making and use of judgement. Provide supervision and/or direct the work of others. Check and review technical aspects of survey data/mapping and ensure that proper procedures are followed according to the NCDOT policies and procedures. Receive other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Actively promotes a safe and healthy work environment in accordance with applicable safety manuals, MUTCD, and OSHA regulations. Encourage and assist employees in training programs and career development. Monitors and supervises employees to ensure compliance with personnel policies and management practices. Evaluate and documents employee performance including one-on-one feedback sessions with employees. The ability to operate a motor vehicle is needed. Close visual acuity to use testing instruments, to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements. The applicant must exercise limited decision making and judgment. This work involves exposure to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic, and climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. The employee must be able to safely perform manual tasks involving the use of bush axes and other tools on steep slopes and rough terrain. The employees will be expected to work outside in various types of weather, terrain, and hours.
The employee must be able to lift 50 lbs. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC14 $52,592 - $92,036

Management prefers applicants with the following:

• Experience using surveying equipment, instruments, levels, data collectors and GPS equipment.
 • Experience with mathematical functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
 • Experience in performing highway construction stakeouts.
 • Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex surveying.
 • Computer experience including office software and drafting software.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology or Survey Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and seven years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
