Description of Work

This position is located in the Fayetteville Division Design Construct Unit (DDC). Position will assist with preparation of preliminary highway design; final highway construction plans and estimates of quantities on the more complex projects. The position requires high level skills in the preparation of design plans with advanced computer Open Roads Designer (ORD) and ProjectWise proficiency and thorough understanding of complex design techniques and procedures. Must have knowledge of NCDOT Design Principles, Roadway Design Manual, AASHTO Guidelines, Bridge Policy, NCDOT Standard Specifications, NCDOT Standard Drawings and All phases of roadway plan preparations. Possess the ability to plan, develop, schedule, track, and complete projects independently or with limited supervision. The position assists the higher-level engineers in creation, training and support in computer systems, applications, and configurations. The position will require detailed understanding of the underlying technical computer systems, applications and configurations that are responsible for seamless automation of the Open Road Designer (ORD) and ProjectWise processes. This senior technician is also instrumental in the training of lower-level technicians in both design and computer techniques. Perform related duties as required.
Additional Expectations:
Possess working knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and construction methods, materials, and equipment. Skill in operating computer systems and CADD coordination. Ability to understand, explain and administer contracts, interpret construction plans, provisions, standards, and specifications. Ability to train, coordinate, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors and the public. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC14 $52,592 - $92,036

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
  • Computer experience with office software and drafting software.
  • Knowledge of mathematical functions (such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry).
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and procedures.
  • Experience in taking notes, collecting field data, and preparing routine reports.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology or Survey Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and seven (7) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
