The Role

Ocado Technology is building the next-generation grocery ecommerce suite that´s changing the way the world shops.

The main purpose of this job is to become an Engineer Manager inside the Engineering Productivity department in the Tech Services division at Ocado Technology, under the Observability area..

Observability area main mission is to provide a platform that enables Ocado employees to detect, react, understand, reduce, and recover from problems to reach operational excellence, it also enables Ocado employees to be entirely aware of the behaviour of their applications and how their users interact with them, which translates into insights that result into better decisions.

The role involves leading the Observability Team, a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, that is creating innovative solutions, and is supporting and evolving the Observability platform of the OTP (Ocado Technology Platform) provided by EngProd (Engineering Productivity) department. 

About the role:

  • Set, adjust and communicate a clear vision for why and what gets built, establishing expectations.
  • Identify key assets and opportunities and keep them tracked and in your radar and backlog.
  • Bring energy to the team and the organisation, foster mutual help, provide context and create an engaged dream team.
  • Own the engineering excellence and efficiency, zooming in and out depending on the needs.
  • Challenge the good-enough when building and shipping.
  • Make trade-offs and calls that move things forward faster, but also better.
  • Fill in the gaps you identify in the daily operations, by facilitating meetings, improving processes, jumping into testing, reviewing or building deliverables yourself where necessary.
  • Remove sources of unnecessary defocus.
  • Monitor team well-being and ensure psychological safety of the team.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, product managers, designers, other engineering leads, etc
  • Keep an eye on compliance, security, cost, process improvements.
  • Improve and write documentation for architecture, users, onboarding, tooling, make sure documentation is up to date every day.
  • Apply continuous improvement (kaizen) principle to everything you and your team does. 
  • Communicate synchronously in team ceremonies, meetings, providing your view and opinions everywhere.
  • Communicate a lot asynchronously on slack and other means, making sure everything that comes from you is explicit, understood and well informed.

  • Accountable for all aspects of the products and/or services the team is delivering, including appropriate timeliness and quality.
  • Work with the team to implement effective and sustainable processes, including ways to ensure innovation, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
  • Set clear goals and expectations for team members, providing timely feedback to support their development and improve their performance.
  • Work actively to build good relationships and trust between the team and other stakeholders, embedding a ‘one Ocado’ approach.
  • Manage upwards effectively, ensuring your Senior Engineering Manager and Head of Engineering are informed of progress, celebrating team successes and making key risks visible.
  • Coach team members and create a healthy environment that facilitates high-performing teams and is aligned with Ocado Values and Ocado Technology Principles.
  • Responsible for the team's compliance with Ocado Technology engineering principles, and technical and departmental standards.

Required skills and experience:

Essential

  • Engineering management and leadership experience of at least 3 years in a previous role.
  • Deep Knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), Security and Quality.
  • Computer Science (or related subject) degree and background.
  • Excellent technical writing skills, excellent spoken and written English.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Platform Engineering/DevEx discipline.
  • Knowledge of Observability practices and tools .
  • Knowledge of AWS/Cloud environments.
  • Knowledge of Terraform and Configuration as code.
  • Knowledge of either Java, Go or Python. 
  • Knowledge of Kanban/Lean practicioning.
