Intro

We’re seeking our next Engineering Manager, a role that balances two primary responsibilities. As part of this position, you’ll work as a Senior Software Engineer while also acting as a coach and manager for a group of engineers, helping to foster their growth and development.

We are seeking a person who will help us develop the next-generation, AI-powered architecture design product. Our teams work on everything from complex 3D drawing on the web to building machine-learning-based real-time analyses. Your contributions will have a direct impact on shaping our offering. It will enable our users to discover smart, sustainable solutions and gain valuable insights in their projects.

About us

We are on a mission to help design better cities. According to the United Nations, more than 90% of future population growth will happen in cities. The construction industry is responsible for 40% of global CO2 emissions. To respond to this trend and combat climate change, the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry needs to change the way they work.

We are building the new generation of cloud-based software tools that will drive this change in AEC. We started our journey as Spacemaker, a Norway-based startup, and became part of Autodesk in November of 2020.

Our tools help architects, urban planners, and real estate developers find the smartest and most sustainable ways to unlock the potential of their projects. We focus on enabling outcome-based design through assessing living quality (sun, daylight potential, noise, et al), environmental impact (embodied and operational carbon), and profitability of our users' projects.

How we work

We’re a fundamentally agile organization. Our way of working is built on empowered teams which means they have the freedom to innovate at speed while staying aligned. We strongly believe in servant leadership and team accountability. Our teams are empowered to find the best way to develop their solutions, taking a bottom-up approach to decision making.

In each team, software and machine-learning engineers work closely together with product managers and designers, collaborating across functions and time zones. Autonomy also means it’s up to you to decide where you’d like to work from; we strongly believe in a hybrid working culture. Responsibilities

As an Engineering Manager, you will have the opportunity to apply and grow both your technical and people skills to enhance our product’s impact on our users’ workflow.

On the engineering side, you will work with a wide range of technologies, including web-based 3D frameworks, large-scale systems, and cloud computing, tackling exciting challenges alongside a team of highly engaged and motivated colleagues. As part of our product teams, you’ll be hands-on, solving real-world problems with great engineering. Our organizational culture encourages managers to contribute directly to the work while also supporting others.

On the managerial side, you’ll play an active role in our engineering management team, which collectively supports around 60 engineers. Your main responsibilities as a manager will be to empower team members to succeed, foster a sense of belonging, and collaborate with other managers to build a solution-focused culture. In the spirit of servant leadership, we hope you’ll share your knowledge and expertise with other engineers, acting as both coach and culture bearer.

Our commitment is to a long-term, strategic approach in building a workplace where talented individuals can make an impact and find continuous challenge and growth. We strive to be the best place to work for everyone looking to make a difference.

A few examples of managerial responsibilities

  • Professional development - communicating goals and expectations, fostering a feedback culture, and providing all support needed for the development of great engineers.

  • Recruitment and employer branding - attract, recruit, onboard, and retain engineers to build a diverse and inclusive team.

  • Processes and systems - make sure we have systems in place to improve our skillset and way of working – in the organization, within your team of engineers and on an individual level. You push us to be happy, but never satisfied, about how we build great products

Desired profile

  • Thrives in an autonomous culture

  • Advocates for code that reduces time-to-value

  • Enables co-workers through knowledge sharing and mentorship

  • Experience with multiple languages and technologies

  • Enjoys breaking complex tasks into smaller pieces

  • Mission and impact-driven

  • Ability to drive the team’s work to completion

Even if you feel you don’t check off all the items on the list, we still encourage you to apply.
