About the Team

The Photon OS Engineering team is responsible for the development, maintenance, and enhancement of Photon OS, a minimal Linux container host optimized for cloud-native applications, Kubernetes, and other container technologies. We focus on delivering a secure, performant, and reliable operating system that serves as the foundation for various VCF products and solutions.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced and passionate Engineering Manager to lead our Photon OS engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for guiding the team in the design, development, and delivery of Photon OS features and improvements. You will foster a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning, while ensuring the team meets its objectives and contributes to the overall success of VCF.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a team of talented software engineers, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and career development support.

  • Drive the technical roadmap for Photon OS, working closely with product management and engineering leadership to define priorities and deliver high-quality solutions.

  • Oversee the entire software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and design to implementation, testing, and deployment.

  • Ensure the team adheres to best practices in software development, including code quality, testing, and documentation.

  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment, promoting knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

  • Recruit, onboard, and retain top engineering talent.

  • Manage project timelines, resources, and dependencies to ensure timely delivery of features, while making necessary adjustments to accommodate changing priorities.

  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and upper management, and ability to manage dependencies and requirements across different teams.

  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies related to Linux, containerization, and cloud-native ecosystems.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of experience in software development, with at least 5 years in a technical leadership or management role.

  • Strong technical background in Linux operating systems, kernel development, and open-source software.

  • Experience with virtualization and container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Experience with security certification programs and requirements, particularly STIG and FIPS 140-3.

  • Experience with CVE tracking, assessment, and management in software products.

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., C, Go, Python).

  • Familiarity with build systems, package management (e.g., RPM, DEB), and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.

  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate engineering teams of up to 25 engineers.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience working in an Agile development environment.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience contributing to or managing open-source projects.

  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware vSphere).

  • Understanding of security best practices in operating system development.

  • Experience with software supporting development and CI/CD (Jira, Git, GitHub, Jenkins, Bugzilla)

Additional Job Description:

Compensation and Benefits 

The annual base salary range for this position is $127,100 - $226,000.

 

This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in accordance with relevant plan documents, and equity in accordance with equity plan documents and equity award agreements.
