About the Department
The Cloudflare Gateway team builds the tools that keep the world's largest enterprises secure. As part of Cloudflare One, our team is responsible for developing high-performance security services that intercept and inspect traffic at the edge. We operate at a massive scale, processing millions of requests per second to protect users from malware, phishing, and data exfiltration. We are a team of curious, principled engineers who value transparency and technical excellence.
The Role
As an Engineering Manager for the Gateway team, you will lead a group of talented software engineers dedicated to both scaling our security products and driving the development of new features. You will be responsible for the growth and well-being of your team, the delivery of complex technical roadmaps, and the reliability of services that our customers depend on every second. You will act as a bridge between product requirements and technical execution, ensuring we build sustainable, high-quality systems.
Key Responsibilities
- People Leadership: Mentor and coach a diverse team of engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, psychological safety, and high performance.
- Technical Delivery: Own the end-to-end execution of the team's roadmap, ensuring projects are delivered with high quality and align with Cloudflare's long-term architectural goals.
- Strategic Collaboration: Partner closely with Product Management and diverse stakeholders across the company to define requirements, prioritize the backlog, and communicate progress.
- Operational Excellence: Drive improvements in system reliability and on-call health, ensuring the team maintains high availability for mission-critical gateway services.
Required:
- Proven Leadership: Experience managing software engineering teams, preferably in a fast-paced environment, with a track record of developing talent and leading through technical challenges.
- Communication: Ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Operational Mindset: Experience maintaining production services and a commitment to building observable, reliable systems.
Desirable:
- Systems Expertise: Deep understanding of distributed systems, networking protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP/S, DNS), or high-performance proxy technologies.
- Technical Stack: Familiarity with Rust or Go.
- Domain Experience: Background in the cybersecurity or Zero Trust space.
- Team Management: Experience managing remote or geographically distributed teams.
