Who we are

At Fortis Games we aspire to make great games that bring people together while redefining how game companies work. We believe in building a sense of belonging through our games, their communities, and how we operate and treat each other. Through our game communities, we will create powerful connections and lasting memories. We will foster a culture of diversity, equity and belonging where together our diverse skills, experiences and backgrounds impact the games we make.

We are an early but mighty organization with a leadership team of game industry veterans. There are many opportunities for you to have a big impact on the products we'll be making as well as the overall direction of the company. If you're passionate about tackling difficult problems with direct and thoughtful communication and team first mentality, we may be the right place for you.

About the role

As an Engineering Manager, DevOps at Fortis, you will spearhead a multidisciplinary team, focusing on building infrastructure tools and solutions for our game and platform teams. You will collaborate closely with technical directors in charge of building applications to develop the best technical design and approach for deploying, hosting and scaling products within our AWS cloud environment.

You will also play a critical role in defining, implementing, and optimizing the DevOps strategy and technology stack for all applications built at Fortis.

What you’ll achieve

  • Technology Direction Setting and Prioritization: Lead the strategic planning of DevOps projects, focusing on high-level objectives, milestones, and managing technical debt. You'll ensure our DevOps technology stack and project priorities align with company goals and individual customer needs, facilitating smooth and efficient collaboration between the central infrastructure team and the product teams.
  • Team Management: Beyond traditional management tasks, you'll foster a culture of innovation and hands-on engagement. Your responsibilities will include guiding career development and performance but prioritize technical mentorship and direction over routine administrative tasks.
  • Resource Allocation: Allocate DevOps engineering resources effectively, ensuring projects are staffed with the right mix of skills and experience. You'll manage the overall infrastructure costs and work collaboratively to establish frameworks for thinking about and reporting on infrastructure costs and operations.
  • Stakeholder Management: Act as a bridge between your DevOps team, technical directors, game producers and release management teams, ensuring clear communication of priorities and deliverables, as well as strategic alignment of technology choices.
  • Process Improvement: Lead the evolution of our DevOps processes, advocating for best practices in architecture, automation, continuous delivery observability and uptime management. You'll push for improvements that increase efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
  • Team Health: Promote a collaborative and innovative work environment, resolving conflicts and encouraging open dialogue about challenges and opportunities.

What you’ll need to be successful

  • Proven Leadership: Demonstrated success in a leadership role within a DevOps or similar technical team, with experience in setting technology direction and aligning team efforts with organizational goals.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong background in infrastructure solution architecture, as well as software development. Able to offer technical leadership in automation, containerization, microservices architecture, cloud deployments and software development. Experience with AWS and infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform is essential.
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication abilities to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clear understanding of DevOps strategies and their impact on the organization.
  • Agile Experience: Familiarity with Agile development methodologies, capable of guiding the team through iterative improvements and maintaining high productivity.
  • Hands-on Approach: Willingness to dive into technical details, providing guidance and oversight on DevOps best practices and implementation.
  • Management Experience: While not the primary focus, some experience in managing teams is beneficial, particularly in fostering career development and technical excellence within a team.
