The Role

About the Team

The ChatGPT Research Acceleration team works closely with our research, engineering, product, and design teams to deliver model improvements for our users. We build the systems and tools that empower our researchers and engineers to rapidly, safely, and easily ship new models.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced EM to lead 1-2 of the teams within the ChatGPT Research Acceleration team. Our focus is to accelerate research and product innovation with fast, efficient flywheels that empower teams to align models with evolving user needs and human priorities. Our charter is to deliver tools, systems, and infrastructure that accelerate reinforcement learning through rapid experimentation, safe data handling, and constant user feedback.

In this role, you will:

  • Hire, grow, and manage a high-performing engineering team 

  • Build tools, systems, and infrastructure that accelerate our research deployment velocity

  • Set the strategy, build a roadmap, create measurable goals, and lead your team to deliver

  • Collaborate closely with a broad set of stakeholders, including research, engineering, product, design, inference

  • Ensure projects are on track, your team is utilized effectively, and core engineering needs are continuously addressed

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have experience leading successful ML infrastructure/platform teams and a strong and in-depth understanding of the experience of ML modeling teams

  • Are a seasoned technical leader, with 8+ years experience in the industry, and 3+ years in engineering management

  • Are experienced in collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure that reliability, scalability, efficiency are considered in the design and development of new systems and tools

  • Are comfortable with ambiguity and rapidly changing conditions, with a strong track record of delivery in rapidly changing, highly collaborative, multi-stakeholder environments

  • Own problems end-to-end, and are willing to pick up whatever knowledge you're missing to get the job done. You will be expected to be able to be hands-on to help the team debug issues or manage systems from time to time as needed.

  • Have a humble attitude, an eagerness to help your colleagues, and a desire to do whatever it takes to make the team succeed

  • Have a strong track record of coaching engineers to achieve their peak potential

  • Have experience closing competitive candidates for your team, and the ability to craft and convey compelling visions of the future

This role is based in our San Francisco office. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. We offer relocation assistance to new employees.
