About the Team

The ChatGPT Tasks team is focused on evolving ChatGPT from a simple Q&A tool into a truly useful assistant that collaborates with users on their work. This collaboration begins with Canvas, our vision to evolve ChatGPT beyond chat and provide an interactive playground for the model to create rich experiences with users. As a key member of this team, you will help shape the future of AI-assisted productivity.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Canvas engineering team. In this role, you will help build and scale a world-class engineering team, drive the execution of complex cross-functional projects, and contribute to the long-term strategy of transforming ChatGPT into an indispensable assistant. You will play a critical role in managing the team, ensuring product quality and reliability, and establishing processes that foster collaboration and efficiency.

In this role, you will:
  • Manage and grow a high-performing engineering team in a fast-paced, high-expectation environment.

  • Ramp up on the team’s technology, product, and business goals, including hands-on work to develop a deep technical understanding.

  • Lead hiring and onboarding efforts to build a strong, collaborative team.

  • Set clear priorities and strategic direction in collaboration with engineering, product, design, and research teams.

  • Drive process improvements to increase team effectiveness and product quality.

  • Deliver complex, cross-functional projects that align with business objectives and drive impact.

  • Ensure the Canvas platform is scalable, reliable, and continuously improving.

  • Collaborate closely with Product and Research teams to push the boundaries of AI-enabled assistance.

You might thrive in this role if you:
  • Have 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams in a high-performance, fast-paced environment.

  • Bring 5+ years of experience building and operating distributed systems at scale.

  • Have a strong track record of leading world-class teams and delivering impactful projects.

  • Thrive in ambiguity and can adapt quickly to rapidly changing conditions.

  • Have a strong coaching mindset and excel at guiding engineers to reach their peak potential.

  • Are eager to contribute hands-on when needed to gain technical insights and lead by example.

  • Are comfortable navigating AI/ML research collaborations (nice to have).

  • 90-day and 1-year goals:90-day goals:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the team's technology, product, and business objectives.

  • Manage and support the existing individual contributors on the team.

  • Drive hiring and onboarding efforts to grow the team.

  • Establish clear priorities and strategic plans in collaboration with cross-functional partners.

  • Deliver improvements in product quality, reliability, and team processes.
