Job Description Summary

As Engineering Lead for the Payments Services Platform, you’ll lead agile, DevOps-driven teams to deliver secure, scalable payment solutions using Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and cloud technologies.
You’ll shape technical strategy, mentor engineers across disciplines, and drive innovation while maintaining high level of service in a critical part of the UK’s financial infrastructure
Your experience in software engineering leadership, microservices architecture, and continuous delivery will be key to your success in this role.

SALARY: £104,686 - £123,160

LOCATION(S): London

HOURS: Full-time

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week currently, or 40% of our time, at our London office.

About this opportunity

Are you a tech leader who loves empowering teams and driving? Within the Payments Platform - Instant Payments Lab, we’re looking for an Engineering Lead to drive the success of our teams, ensuring they have everything they need to thrive!

In this role, you’ll set the overall direction for our engineering teams, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and efficiency. You’ll work closely with product owners to make sure technology is at the heart of decision-making, while also keeping a close eye on risk, resilience, and costs. While you may not be coding day to day, your deep technical expertise will be essential in guiding and mentoring the team.

What you’ll do

You’ll form part of the senior management team, managing the engineers in your teams and taking ownership for their learning and development. Engineers will be multi-disciplinary including software engineers, quality engineers, solution engineers / architects and DevOps to name a few. Through your team you’ll aim to deliver the highest quality customer driven software whilst continually coaching, motivating, mentoring, and supporting the team.

Examples of activities include:

  • Responsible for establishing and leading our design and decision-making forums, providing expert guidance to colleagues based on your extensive knowledge

  • Building and nurture relationships with senior leaders to effectively influence and bring visionary strategies to life across the organisation

  • To oversee the management of key collaborators within the business and maintain productive partnerships with external collaborators

  • Harnessing the power of both private and public cloud technologies, pushing the boundaries of what's possible and enhancing our technical capabilities

  • Leading and mentoring multiple feature teams, empowering them to own and deliver innovative solutions. You'll play a pivotal role in their daily success and advocate for their work at the highest levels of the company

  • Creating and implement technical strategies aimed at redefining and modernising our lab infrastructure

What you’ll need

  • Proven experience defining technology vision and architecture working closely with lead architects to drive strategic development

  • A deep, inquisitive focus on technology, with a track record of finding opportunities to optimise and enhance systems and processes

  • A strong understanding of the experience, with hands on experience in improving team productivity, morale and overall efficiency

  • A solid background in resilience and security by design, ensuring teams take full ownership of production issues and prioritise a customer first approach

  • A passion for developing talent, fostering a product-based approach, attracting and retaining top engineering talent to build impactful teams

  • Architecture and Engineering knowledge esp. on Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and Cloud

  • Technical knowledge of microservices development

  • A broad ranging general level of technical knowledge

In addition, any of the below, would also be beneficial but is not required so please submit your application even if you don’t have this experience:

  • Experience in the Payments Domain / Financial Services in general

  • Exposure to private or public cloud

  • Understanding of Continuous Delivery and Continuous Integration tooling
