Job Summary:

The Staff Engineer must display a tactful, mature, and professional demeanor with well-developed interpersonal skills including the ability to work with diverse personnel.Must be capable of taking instruction and completing tasks in a timely manner with minimal direction, but not hesitate to seek assistance when needed. Candidate should have an understanding of the boiler industry, from fabrication to operation of the boiler systems, be technically astute, and be able to clearly communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel. Candidate should be prepared to travel to customer sites periodically to help troubleshoot problems and should be capable of explaining both the problem and the recommended solution to a broad spectrum of customers. The successful candidate will display strong analytical and time management skills with the ability to prioritize work on multiple tasks with tight deadlines. The Staff Engineer will work intimately with QC, Sales, Estimating, Fabricating, and Field Execution teams within Cleaver-Brooks Sales and Service (CBSS) as well as interacting directly with customers, suppliers, and peers within the manufacturing divisions of Cleaver-Brooks. The successful candidate must be able to apply intellect, creativity, adaptability and judgment to effectively deal with changing priorities and timelines.

Essential Duties:

  • Collaborate with team members in the preparation of estimates, project plans, detailed designs, design validation and component fabrication.
  • Deliver timely, thorough, and accurate engineering projects.
  • Maintain clear lines of communication with other CBSS departments, providing transparency of priorities and clear target dates for deliverables.
  • Display superior written and oral communication skills and employ effective listening skills.
  • Display a strong commitment to safety and quality.
  • Review design requirements, proposals, specifications, material data, and manuals to assess project feasibility.
  • Propose alternate solutions to problems providing gap analysis when appropriate to compare with original design requirements.
  • Participate in technical design reviews of existing designs and peer reviews.
  • Produce/Audit material estimates, take-offs, and BOM for project estimates and bids.
  • Produce/Audit design, installation, and start up documents (drawings, specification, operating guidelines, etc.).
  • Provide technical support to sales and operations for problem resolution and training.
  • Travel to customer locations to assess real-time boiler system issues and recommend repairs to assist the customer in solving their problems.
  • Utilize best-in-class tools to develop innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Design creative and high-quality engineered boiler products using CAD.
  • Develop manufacturing layout drawings and standards for fabrication, testing, and quality control.
  • Mentor and assist in developing engineering team skills and industry knowledge.
  • Evaluate current process and capabilities and introduce new processes.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the maintenance of engineering archives.
  • Adhere to all company policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.



Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is strongly preferred but will consider applicants with a Bachelor's of Science in another technical discipline paired with relevant boiler/technical experience.
  • Formal training in LEAN, Six Sigma or TOC a plus.
  • ASME certification a plus.
  • Professional Engineer License a plus.



Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a manufacturing/industrial environment.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in boiler and steam plant design, operations and maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of heat transfer, fluid dynamics and the principals associated with steam generation.
  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D design applications (AutoCad).
  • The ability to apply for and be awarded a TWIC Card.
  • Project Management experience is a plus.

Travel:

Approximately 25% travel possible in support of sales and field work, predominately regional travel to visit client sites, project locations, and other CBSS offices.
