About BlueLabs

BlueLabs is a leading provider of analytics services and technology for a variety of industry clients: including government, business, and political campaigns. We help our clients optimize their engagements with individual customers, supporters, and stakeholders to achieve their goals. Simply put: we help our partners do the most good by getting the most from their data.

Today, our team of data analysts, scientists, engineers, and strategists come together from diverse backgrounds to share a passion for using data to solve the world's greatest social and analytical challenges. We've served more than 400 organizations ranging from government agencies, advocacy groups, unions, political campaigns, international groups, and companies. Along the way, we've developed some of the most innovative tools available in analytics, media optimization, reporting, and influencer outreach-- serving a diverse set of industries, including the automotive, travel, consumer packaged goods, entertainment, healthcare, media, telecom, and more.

About the team:

The BlueLabs Civic Tech practice revolutionizes the way government agencies use data to reduce the friction between residents and the essential services they use. Our team develops deep expertise within the areas our clients care about most, then builds data programs that create impact at scale. We work closely with internal government innovation groups, and build on the analytics methodology pioneered in e-commerce, advocacy, politics, and consumer finance.

About the role:

This role will help to modernize and scale an internal-facing data science and analytics ecosystem. As a Software Engineer, you will immerse yourself in the existing codebase and independently identify and implement areas of improvement. As the sole Software Engineer on a team of DevOps and Data Engineers, you will be a mentor and champion of clean, modular design. You will spend approximately 80% of your time reading, writing, and debugging code, and the remainder of your time assisting the DevOps and Data Engineering teams with ad-hoc analyst support and system maintenance. This role will report to the Tech Lead Manager, Civic Tech.

In this position, you will:

  • Work closely with the DevOps and Data Engineering teams to modernize and future-proof a legacy data processing platform
  • Coordinate with internal teams, including Data Engineering, Analytics, and program, to understand user requirements and provide technical solutions
  • Develop systems that are resilient and that fail gracefully
  • Jump in where needed to troubleshoot analyst-reported bugs, work cross-functionally to respond to issues quickly
  • Test and debug Python and Bash scripts
  • Improve functionality of existing systems
  • Work collaboratively to help build out system-wide documentation
  • Identify areas of inefficiency and take the initiative to improve them
  • Mentor earlier-career engineers and help to remove technical blockers for other members of the team
  • Think creatively to solve complex software problems
  • Such other reasonable tasks as may be assigned by management

What we are seeking:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience; focus on internal tooling and automation is a plus. Beyond exact years, we seek candidates with experience working on flexible teams in multi-system environments
  • Relevant experience sufficient to have the ability to work independently on systems with limited existing documentation
  • Experience processing data using scripting languages; Python preferred; familiarity with Bash
  • Expertise with Git
  • Experience with and interest in championing Object Oriented design principles and DRY coding practices
  • Experience with mentorship and/or teaching in a technical environment
  • Creativity, perseverance, and willingness to jump in when necessary
  • A high attention to detail and ability to effectively manage and prioritize several tasks or projects concurrently
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills when working with internal and external team members of varied backgrounds, roles, and functions
  • Interest in applying your technical skills towards improving access to care, particularly by addressing barriers disproportionately felt by members of marginalized communities
  • This position requires that you successfully attain and maintain a Federal Public Trust background investigation that our government clients require. This includes a requirement that the individual has US Citizenship or US residency for three of the past five years

Nice to Have:

  • General familiarity with systems security best practices and ability to collaborate with federal partners to continuously improve program security posture.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools and processes. Primarily Ansible and Terraform.
  • Familiarity with data processing tools like Apache Airflow and AWS Glue.

What recruitment looks like:

We expect to hire this position in October/November 2022. To get there, we anticipate the successful candidate will complete interviews and a technical screen (HR 15 minutes, tech screen & hiring manager interview, and panel interview 60 minutes), all virtually. During the interview process, you will be asked questions to describe your background and experience relevant to the position. This may include providing examples of projects you worked on, tools or applications you've used, and knowledge you have applied. We often look for explanations of "how or why" so it's helpful to have details ready.

What we offer:

BlueLabs offers a friendly work environment and competitive benefits package including:

  • Premier health insurance plan
  • 401K matching
  • Unlimited vacation leave
  • Paid sick, personal, and volunteer leave
  • 13 paid holidays
