Our success is dependent on building teams that include people from different backgrounds and experiences who can challenge each other’s assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we look for a diverse pool of applicants including those from historically marginalized groups — women, people with disabilities, people of color, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or gender nonconforming, first and second generation immigrants, veterans, and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

About the Team/Role

The Dev Tooling team is an internal-facing team dedicated to enabling the entire engineering organization to do better work. This wide and intentionally-vague charter encompasses a slew of evolving topics. If there’s a common thread between multiple projects, whether discovered in the present or envisaged for the future, we try to get out ahead and build the systems, tooling, and training needed for that work to be successful. We’re also spearheading a long-term project of open-sourcing our entire service platform -- from kubernetes cluster-building to template-based service development to the development environment/tooling to test it, it’s all going to be one big startup-in-a-box system for the world to use.

In the past, our team has built onboarding documentation, tooling to automatically set up dev machines, and a multi-day exercise that is a tour-de-force of our full technology stack for all engineers to run as they onboard. We also have been coordinating periodic training sessions with third parties in applicable technologies to our organization: Golang, Kubernetes, React, and more.

We are looking for a dedicated squad member to expand on many of these currently-primordial areas:

We’ve had the most success with training programs when we carefully work with the vendor to tune the content to our company’s exact tooling — we want to double down on this approach and really evolve an ongoing set of classes for our engineers to take, with both introductory and advanced topics.

We have rudimentary engineering architecture presentations we run once a month. We’d like to evolve this into in-house training programs around some of our more bespoke technology stacks — our deployment structure/partitioning system, our service map, our observability system, how we use kubernetes, the services provided in our clusters, graphql, and more.

Our onboarding exercise is a great start, but we want to expand it out much further — add telemetry exercises, data pipeline work, experimentation, light database tuning, and more. Just like an introductory course at college, we want everyone to at least dabble widely in what we do here in their first weeks, so they know what tooling exists across the board. And this program will continually evolve as our company does.

Designing modules for an upcoming self-service learning system for everything from security topics through to tech knowledge expansion

Help organize our existing twice-a-year org-wide hackathons and provide more structure/planning around the lead-up, team organization, judging, etc.

Taking feedback from the rest of the org back to the dev tooling team to continuously improve everything we do.

Basic Requirements

  • You love enabling your coworkers to be successful
  • You thrive in an ambiguous environment that requires seeking out and collaborating with both your team and the rest of the company to design effective solutions
  • Able to write high quality code in a programming language (e.g. Golang, Ruby, Scala, Elixir, Python) that deploys to a production environment used by customers
  • Experience designing and supporting internal-facing tooling where the “customers” are your coworkers
  • Understanding of which details are important and ability to prioritize incremental delivery over long-term go-dark projects
  • Experience with container-based workflows and services (Kubernetes preferred but not required)
  • Familiar with continuous deployment environments
  • Willingness to learn new technologies (most of our time is spent in Golang, with a smattering of Ruby/Rails, Typescript, and Elixir)
  • You embody our core values. We are hungry craftspeople, we have grit, we are honest, we take ownership, we have each other’s back no matter what, we’re one with our customers, and we find strength in diversity and inclusion

Why You’ll Love It Here

• Employee referral bonuses to encourage the addition of great new people to the team

• Plus, unlimited snacks and beverages in our kitchen (once we're back in the office, that is!)
