About the job
The Red Hat Linux Engineering team is looking for a Senior Software Engineering Manager to join us. In this role, you will manage a distributed team of engineers working on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) kernel. You'll need to apply your prior software development experience to succeed in this role in Linux Engineering. As a Senior Software Engineering Manager, you will enable your team to contribute to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) kernel development and amplify your team's role in the open source community. You will interact with the Enabling Linux in Safety Applications (ELISA) community along with the use and promotion of Linux in the automotive space. The work location for this position is flexible, remote candidates will also be considered. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.
What you will do
- Interact daily with a team of kernel and firmware developers and all aspects of people management
- Support the career development of engineers on the team
- Work with individual technical leads, management, and product owners to plan and track the team's work, report on progress in planning and review meetings, and help the team reach technical consensus
- Interact with peer engineering groups within to deliver releases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
- Coordinate work at a high level with the internal quality engineering (QE), documentation, and release management teams
- Represent the team at functional meetings, conferences, and customer and partner discussions
What you will bring
- Management and team lead experience or other experience leading a team of engineers
- Background in computer software development
- Flexibility to work with a widely distributed and remote team
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and schedules
- Solid written and verbal communication skills In English
- Familiarity with Linux or another operating system
The following are considered a plus:
- Prior experience in automotive development operating systems, drivers, and safety
- Leadership experience through direct people management
- Knowledge of the ISO26262 international standard and its application to safety-critical components
- Knowledge of internet of things (IoT) and edge computing
- Proven record of handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and working under pressure
- Troubleshooting skills with a passion for problem-solving, investigation, and learning new technologies
- Familiarity with open source software and community interaction
- Degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a technology-related discipline
