About the job
The Red Hat Engineering team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the CoreOS team with a focus on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) CoreOS and Fedora CoreOS container optimized operating system spins. In this role, you'll be part of a distributed team and will coordinate work with other engineers, product managers, product owners, scrum masters, and community members to write new features for a rapidly changing container orchestration space. The role involves working in an agile environment on feature enhancements, bug fixes, and test automation. You'll help define the architecture of new projects or features, and develop those from inception through to adoption. Expect to write code, review pull requests, fix bugs, update docs, and work with other teams to design complete solutions.
Since container technology is still evolving, it's not expected that you will come in with the experience required to start submitting pull requests on day one. This is a great opportunity to learn how to work in a fast paced environment. You'll get to work on many emerging technologies, and maybe even create some new ones. You'll need to work on your own because sometimes with these new technologies, documentation isn't abundant but there are always team members around to help. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.
What you will do

  • Participate on a scrum team
  • Complete tasks on a given timeline
  • Give demos to your peers on work you've completed each sprint
  • Design technical solutions to abstract problems
  • Work with upstream communities like Fedora, Fedora CoreOS, OKD, and Kubernetes
  • Ensure test plans for the code you create exist and that documentation is correct
  • Design and implement automated test cases
  • Analyze defects, design solutions, and engineer fixes
  • Quickly respond to security threats
  • Ability to thrive in a rapidly changing environment

What you will bring

  • Working knowledge of Linux
  • Expertise in software design and development
  • Experience with at least one of the following: Golang, Rust, Python
  • Ability to learn new programming languages
  • Good written and verbal English communication skills
  • Understanding of how to use software source control
  • Understanding of how open source and Free Software communities work
  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery

The following are considered a plus:

  • Experience with Golang, Rust, Python, C
  • Experience with Linux system programming
  • Experience with Git
  • Experience with Jenkins
  • Familiarity with Linux containers or Kubernetes
  • Ability to present to customers and stakeholders
