What's the role?
We are seeking a passionate Sr. Software Engineer who can contribute to the DevOps transformation and Business Domain Driven (BDDA) initiatives within Northwestern Mutual's Enterprise Shared Services (ESS) group. The Sr. Software Engineer role works with the Asst. Director of Engineering Coaching & Tech Adoption.
Assist in the adoption of Northwestern Mutual's "Integrated Tech Stacks" (golden paths) and Engineering standard processes, advising and mentoring teams, including providing technical & process guidance.
Work with multiple scrum teams as the DevOps Enablement & Adoption SME (Subject Matter Expert), will develop and strengthen internal/external relations and establish cross-team partnerships to deliver on product quality goals.

  • Review current development processes, artifacts, reports, tools and metrics to identify gaps from the perspective of a mature DevOps implementation.
  • Coach, influence and build relationships with scrum teams to promote adoption of tools and standard processes for Northwestern Mutual's Integrated Tech Stack. Assist in scrum teams' efforts to adhere to the guidelines and practices of enterprise engineering strategy and standards.
  • Use communication and influencing skills with all the key partners to ensure the enterprise DevOps vision is understood and implemented correctly.
  • Be "hands-on" technically. Provide technical direction and support to multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing deep knowledge and expertise in DevOps and API driven development practices.
  • Apply quality metrics to improve quality standards as part of the regular continuous improvement efforts.
  • Bring your knowledge of Industry trends and solutions around DevOps, Trunk Based Development, Test Automation, API driven development etc. Focus on continuous improvements including usage of appropriate tools, techniques etc.
  • Participate in interviews, onboarding and training activities as required.


Your high-level achievements for the first year are the following:

  • Within three months, analyze the current enterprise landscape, process and maturity levels and begin to partner with Enterprise SDLC, BDDA and DevOps groups for improvements around strategy, methodology, framework etc.
  • Within six months lead and facilitate workshops/trainings across the Technology function and provide technical and process guidance on implementing DevOps standard methodologies.
  • Within one year, become a DevOps and Test Automation enthusiast for the ESS group.


The ideal skills we are looking for:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • 4-5 years professional experience required in Software Development and/or Test Automation in DevOps environments. Authority in modern Secure-SDLC practices, Test Automation and Process Improvements in Agile/DevOps setting.
  • 3-5+ of hands-on experience in code development using JavaScript/node.js and Java.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of Agile concepts including Scrum and Kanban.
  • Experienced in DevOps development, deployments & Release cycles using Containers/CaaS (Docker/Kubernetes) - Trunk based development, Blue/Green and Canary deployments, Feature Flags etc.
  • Exposure to Shift-Left development practices, including Unit testing, Code quality. Experience with Unit Test Automation frameworks like Jest and code quality tools like SonarQube. Test Driven Development (TDD) experience would be a plus.
  • Exposure to end-to-end API lifecycle - including coding, debugging, testing, deploying and maintaining APIs; integrating APIs with 3rd party services etc.
  • Excellent Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaborative teammate. Proven track record to mentor and advise development and product teams.


Compensation Range:
Pay Range - Start:
$89,040.00
Pay Range - End:
$127,200.00
