About the job
The Red Hat Office of the CTO Networking team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join us and work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. In this role, you will serve as a key member of our engineering team working on forward-looking open source networking technologies and you'll help set the technical direction for networking at Red Hat. You will work on projects to identify, evaluate, and develop emerging networking technologies intended to enhance the Red Hat portfolio of offerings and services. If these projects are successful, you will work closely with product teams to transition the new technologies into production. In addition to working with others on the CTO Networking team and downstream product teams, you will also work closely with upstream communities, partners, and customers. We are open to location for the right experience. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.
What you will do

  • Work with product teams, community members, partners, and customers to identify challenges in the networking space, and design, implement, and champion solutions for these challenges
  • Work on your own and with other engineers on the team to design and implement support for future-looking networking technologies and proofs of concepts
  • Work with Red Hat product engineering teams to integrate emerging technologies into the Red Hat portfolio of offerings
  • Mentor junior-level team members
  • Contribute to the success of the team by sharing your work and expertise with the team
  • Advocate internally for technology development and support needed for strategic next-generation offerings
  • Contribute to open source software projects and initiatives through code and leadership
  • Attend relevant conferences representing Red Hat and the projects that you are part of


What you will bring

  • 5+ years of industry experience in networking software and product design and development
  • Technical understanding of one or more areas of software-defined networking (SDN)
  • Expertise in one or more programming languages like C, C++, or Golang; ability and willingness to become proficient in new languages if needed
  • Ability to work on your own and in small teams in a globally distributed environment
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and comfortable context switching between projects; ability to quickly learn and understand new technologies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to directly interact with product teams, community members, partners, and customers
  • Comfortable working closely with engineers from a wide variety of Red Hat's product teams and open source communities


Broad experience with and understanding of multiple of the following:

  • SDN
  • Network functions virtualization (NFV)
  • Linux Kernel networking
  • Routing and switching software and protocols
  • Virtualization
  • Containers
  • Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift
  • Any enterprise Linux OS
