Principal Architect, IT Platform-as-a-Service

Red Hat is looking for a Principal Architect to join the Information Technology (IT) team in Raleigh, NC. In this role, you will be responsible for architecting the continued evolution of our next-gen, cloud-native application deployment environment, operating on OpenShift technologies. You'll need to have the highest level of technical expertise to manage the overall technical design of our mission-critical OpenShift clusters and ancillary services. You will play a key role in setting the strategic direction of our internal offerings, including partnering with other architects and technical subject-matter-experts to ensure that we're motivating material improvements in development teams' day-to-day experiences across an ecosystem of connected and increasingly self-service solutions.
As a Principal Architect, you will serve as a senior member of technical associates responsible for the long-term health of our platform and play a leading role devising appropriate platform governance policies and partnering with the delivery teams from planning through delivery to ensure adherence to architectural principles and standards. You will be the technical subject matter expert on the corporate Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) leadership team.You will serve as an internal advocate for and champion of cloud-native architectures, helping application teams as a consultant when requested and supporting customer-reference programs that help Red Hat's customers understand how we successfully apply our own technologies in-house.
What you will do
- Design, build, and maintain large-scale, high-performing, and secure Kubernetes and other platform infrastructure on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Red Hat OpenStack Platform, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), etc.
- Work collaboratively with end-users, product owners, and technology stakeholders on defining future-state technology architectures and roadmaps that will deliver upon secure, reliable, and frictionless development experiences
- Develop artifacts including architectural viewpoints, principles, and proof-of-concept or prototype systems that will guide our engineering and operations team's approach
- Provide oversight for technical work to ensure that platform standards are followed
- Serve as the team's resident expert on the direction OpenShift and the Kubernetes community in general and to understand how to best use these emerging trends and account for that in our planning and roadmaps
- Partner with our delivery lead to ensure that roadmap intentions manifest themselves as well-structured market problems, features, epics, and stories within our agile tool and directly participate in grooming and validation of architecturally-relevant stories
- Monitor and maintain platform health using KPIs for performance, security, resilience, technical debt, and agility
- Maintain up-to-date architectural documentation for our platform and services
- Troubleshoot, debug, and diagnose operational issues and guide them to closure
- Support engineering and operational efforts to reduce or eliminate operational and on-call toil through resilient architecture and automation and tooling
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure ongoing compliance with key audit and compliance requirements
What you will bring
- 2+ years of experience leading OpenShift and Kubernetes-based platforms and services
- 7+ years of demonstrated experience working as a technology architect
- Experience defining and maintaining integrated technology roadmaps
- Effective interpersonal skills to inspire and socialize the solution designs
- Expert knowledge of OpenShift, Kubernetes, and container-based technologies
- Demonstrated expertise building systems to meet stringent security and resiliency requirements
- Demonstrated mastery of working with public cloud technologies, including AWS
- Proven experience supporting the continued maturation of development and engineering practices with teams, supporting goals including attributes like quality, security, and velocity
- Deep expertise with scripting and orchestration frameworks, including Ansible, Terraform, and AWS CloudFormation
- Demonstrated mastery in scaling, monitoring, and troubleshooting actively running systems
- Experience developing wider platforms with supporting tool sets including Splunk, PagerDuty, GitLab, Tekton, Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes, and others
- Direct experience with Linux internals and administration
- Good understanding of and direct experience supporting development teams using modern cloud-native design principles like 12-factor, etc.
- Comfortable developing trust with team engineers and supporting and guiding their continued technical development and growth
- Experience with the principles and mechanics of agile development methodologies
