Job Summary

The Systems Engineering Division (SED) provides unmatched experience in systems engineering to the U.S. government and to numerous public and private agencies, universities, nonprofit organizations, consortia, and commercial companies involved in the advanced application of space technology. From systems architecture development to system analysis and optimization, astrodynamics, orbital debris, navigation, failure analysis, mission assurance, cost and schedule assessment, and economic market analysis, SED exploits an incredibly broad array of engineering and business disciplines against a diverse and dynamic portfolio of programs and national challenges.

The Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Office's goal is to incorporate system modeling capabilities to provide space systems engineering analysis, modeling support, and education to government decision makers and other stakeholders. Our team members create, use, and evaluate models that analyze and define space systems. One of the key capabilities at The Aerospace Corporation is the Concept Design Center (CDC), which is an internationally recognized center of excellence in collaborative, concurrent design of space and ground systems that draws on technical experts from across the corporation. The CDC uses a concurrent engineering method and analytical models to estimate system performance and life cycle costs (see our CDC video at https://aerospace.org/video/concept-design-center). We use a variety of computer tools that not only estimate system properties and performance, but we also use SysML tools to define system requirements, behaviors, interfaces, and architecture.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead junior staff in the Model Based Systems Engineering Office (MBSEO). This involves mentoring, counseling, and evaluating performance. This position is in El Segundo, CA but we manage staff in Chantilly, VA too.
  • Help strategize MBSEO vision and goals, develop plans to achieve them, and lead teams to execute. Organization goals are listed on our website at pages.aero.org/MBSE.
  • Assist in staffing the MBSEO by recruiting, hiring, and mentoring new talent
  • Train other members of Aerospace technical staff, program office staff, and government customers on MBSE tools and methods, digital engineering, and modeling practice. This includes coordinating MBSE and other engineering classes through Aerospace University.
  • Seek new business opportunities and partnerships to broaden our customer portfolio. Perform outreach activities such as customer briefings, engineering forums, and conference presentations.
  • Help establish and execute Concept Design Center (CDC) strategy and goals. This includes managing funding resources to generate new CDC capabilities
  • Lead technical teams to develop, implement, and evaluate SysML models to support customers that develop, launch, and operate space systems. We explore space systems defined at all domain levels; enterprise, architecture, vehicle, and even payload levels.

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS in relevant engineering discipline (Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, Math, Computer Science or related technical discipline)
  • At least 5 years' experience in space systems or model-based systems engineering. Some experience may be waived with MS or higher degree in relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated organization skills including project planning and budget management
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and manage teams that deliver quality products on time
  • Knowledge of core space system design disciplines, such as space system architectures, satellite bus design, and payloads.
  • Demonstrated communication skills. You will need to clearly explain complex concepts to customers and fellow employees. You will also need to write clear reports and briefings.
  • A self-starter who can spearhead new efforts. We often pioneer new concepts through pathfinders.
  • Must be able to obtain TS/SCI clearance which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • Current TS/SCI clearance
  • MS or higher degree in relevant discipline
  • Management experience and/or technical team leadership
  • 8 years' experience in space systems engineering
  • Experience in all levels of space systems engineering including vehicle level and architecture level
  • Proficiency with MBSE tools and SysML modeling
    • Tools such as MagicDraw (Cameo, Collaborator), Sparx EA, OpenMBEE
    • SysML modeling of aerospace systems at various domain levels such as architectures, vehicles, and/or payloads
  • Experience with concurrent engineering methods or the Concept Design Center
  • Teaching experience, especially in technical subjects
