What's the role?
This role is in the Investment Products and Services (IPS) organization. IPS Engineering is accountable for the vendors, applications and integrations and investment data that helps NM deliver on the promise we made to deliver comprehensive planning, insurance and investments through a trusted advisor and engaging technology. It's that "whole picture" approach that helps clients create and grow wealth with personalized investments while protecting what they've already built. IPS is responsible for the "create and grow" part of this equation.
The Lead Software Engineer reports to the Sr. Director of Engineering and works in partnership with our technical teams and senior leadership. This role provides impactful thought leadership across multiple teams in IPS engineering. She/He/They will challenge how we approach engineering practices to ensure the appropriate coverage and effectiveness of our capabilities. This role will have direct oversight of setting technology solution directions, understanding business capabilities, carrying out POC's and be a core influencer of our strategies.

Primary Responsibilities:
You will implement holistic solutions utilizing working relationships across the enterprise. You will designs, organize, and execute high impact solutions across teams both within and outside their division. You will establish, aggregate, and share enterprise standards. You will mentor and guide junior engineers within respective division. You will ensure production stability, monitoring, and root cause analysis is executed for your products You will represent Northwestern Mutual's technology organization in community and technology events. You will act as a practitioner, mentor, advisor, or influencer based on the need and the situation. You will cultivate network and talent pipeline by attending and presenting at meetups, conferences, and tech events.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
- 6-8 years of professional experience required
- 5-8+ years of experience leading teams using modern engineering tools, languages, and practices.
- Consistent track record of successfully designing and delivering significant and impactful technology solutions.
- Experience developing and leading solution delivery using agile methods.
- Specialist for the organization in one or more technologies.
- Successfully deals with ambiguity.
- Recognized as the go-to subject matter expert within the division or department.
- Ability to effectively communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences in varying forms and levels of detail.
- Solid understanding of design patterns and architecture.
- Experience with software engineering practices:
- Modern programming languages (React, Node.js, Java, Python, Unix Shell)
- Cloud technologies (CI/CD Pipelines, Git/Gitlab, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS)
- Modern integration methods (Microapps, Microservice / API, Event Streaming, Single Sign-On (SSO), Secure Data File Exchange)
- Architecture diagramming (C4 Models, Sequence, UML)
