Role Summary
Manages the activities of the Product Engineering department; responsible for the design and development of new products and improvement of existing products
Key Responsibilities
- Manages the activities of a product engineering department for the design and development of new products and the redesign of existing products for manufacture and sale
- Initiates expenditure of engineering time and funds on product design activities to develop new products and improve existing ones in accordance with the business plan. Manages product adherence to the various governmental standards
- Is responsible for providing input for forecasting engineering budgets and responsible for managing development costs to within the targets established for the fiscal year
- Controls engineering change notices in the area of responsibility to ensure the cost effectiveness, quality and reliability of products designed
- Develops department budget and recommends staffing level to Chief Engineer/Director
- Supervises assigned engineering and design staff, including: monitoring performance, preparing and administering performance appraisals, personnel development for continuous improvement, counseling, etc.
- Represents the engineering department as appropriate on technical program issues both internally and externally
- Initiates investigation of product problems indicated by the customer, engineers, manufacturing and sales and approves appropriate engineering change notices
- Ability to manage remote locations and track progress against established Project timelines and milestones.
- A continuous improvement mentality and the ability to apply this personal capability and knowledge to the companies Engineering and Design areas.
- The ability to effectively prioritize individual efforts and that of Direct Reports.
- Regular communications and interactions with Customers (current and New Business Opportunities).
- Software product management experience in electronic communications.
- Proven ability to create and execute project plans that achieve defined expectations within budgetary restraints.
- Knowledge and execution experience as it relates to APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and Control Plans linked back to Design.
- Experience in Lean Manufacturing concepts as it relates to design strategies.
Key Qualifications/Requirements
- 10+ years in an Automotive / Automotive Supply Base Engineering environment with progressive advancement in terms of knowledge and responsibilities
- Technical background with an Engineering Degree and/or significant Product Management experience.
- Experience in an Integrated Product Development Team.
- Keen familiarity with various Design Programs (Catia, CAD, UG, etc)
- Knowledge and understanding of Optics and Optics applications as it relates to Automotive Lighting.
- Knowledge of Problem Solving methods (Red X, Six Sigma, 8D, etc)
- Proficient in GD&T
- Full understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
- Highly motivated, self-directed, creative, innovative individual.
- Team / Associate oriented skill set.
- Ability to drive accountability down to Direct Reports through structured requirements, expectations and timelines.
- Full knowledge of Engineering simulation tools and interpretation of simulation data.
- Demonstrates focus on meeting program commitments and enforcement of work plans where timing is not achieved.

Ability to lift max. 50lbs periodically.
