Director, Engineering - Resilience

The Resilience Engineering team is a collection of talented and kind engineers who partner collaboratively with engineering teams across Fastly. We eliminate brittleness from existing systems and build new systems that ensure a high degree of durability, availability, and performance.

The Resilience Engineering team operates as internal consultants who partner directly with other engineering teams. The team is focused on a single project initiative with occasional individual side quests. Depending on the project, we engage and coordinate directly with customers to roll out changes.

We are seeking someone who can manage both high-performing, independent senior engineers as well as nurture newer talent looking to expand their distributed systems skillset. 

What You'll Do

  • Manage a distributed engineering team (all members currently located in the continental United States) and work closely with your team and engineering leaders.
  • Ensure each member of the team has what they need to be successful
  • Mentor and provide regular feedback to engineers
  • Act as an interface point between the team and potential internal partners
  • Represent the team’s interests and mission in key leadership meetings
  • Partner with product and engineering management to prioritize resiliency efforts and focus
  • Clearly communicate upward and outward to set expectations for roadmaps and deliverables
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with other engineering leaders to provide cross-organizational context for the team
  • Recruit and hire engineers
  • Employ your excellent technical and non-technical presentation and communication skills to communicate roadmaps, project progress and design documentation.

What We're Looking For

  • 4+ years of engineering management experience
  • Someone to form strong partnerships with engineering leaders.
  • Experience with Resilience and Reliability concepts
  • Experience with systems programming and running large, distributed systems in production environments (you are not expected to write code, but we highly prefer someone who can navigate team discussions and tradeoffs)
  • Experience with defining new processes and building new internal partnerships
  • Experience with navigating organizational and technical boundaries (our work usually lies at the edges of both)

We value a variety of voices, so this is not a laundry list. It would be an added bonus if you have experience in ANY of these:

  • Experience managing managers
  • Background in hardware installations
  • Background in SRE/operations
  • Experience in Rust and C/C++
  • Knowledge of networking protocols / architectures
  • Consulting background

In accordance with applicable law, Fastly’s minimum base pay for this role if hired in Colorado is $195,000 per year. Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Fastly's equity plan. Final offer amount will be at the company’s sole discretion and determined by multiple factors, including years and depth of experience and expertise, location and other business considerations. Note that this role is available to candidates outside of Colorado and different minimum compensation may apply.
