Job Description Summary
As a Diesel Systems Engineer, the individual is responsible for the development of system-level requirements, translating fuel feature requirements into functional/physical system technical specifications and decomposing those requirements to sub-systems and then further to components.
The individual is expected to operate with a high level of independence and is typically responsible for implementing overall system strategy, discussing requirements with the Fuel Systems Engineering Technical Lead and Subsystem/Component Technical Specialists, helping with complex issues between multiple cross-functional teams, and counseling/advising management. The individual will receive general direction from management but will exercise independent judgment.

  • Performs multiple tasks that require skills in time management. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Interface with global teams across a wide variety of domains (electrical, hardware, controls, customer literature, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), validation, safety engineering, body, and powertrain) to creatively and jointly execute the overall optimal solution for the vehicle and the customer. This also involves working closely with the Fuel System Leadership Team (including the Fuel System Engineering Technical Lead), the Fuel Subsystem Technical Specialist, and also Fuel Component Technical Specialists.
  • Interface between the software/calibration community which operate in the SAFe environment and the fuel hardware teams.
  • Collaborates with CAE engineers to assess system performance to requirements, and compares hardware performance
  • Iterate solutions that optimize system performance and component contributions.
  • Use internal software process/tools for management of specifications.
  • Create and manage Fuel System DFMEAs and ensure linkage via roll-down and roll-up processes to subsystem/component DFMEAs and PFMEAs.
  • Support test procedure and Interface Control Document (ICD) development.
  • Provide technical leadership and support for Fuel related Advanced Technology Work (ATW) projects and all phases of the vehicle development process
  • Define / perform competitive vehicle benchmarking in support of feature and system performance target setting
  • Identifies, tracks, and resolves engineering issues
  • Stays abreast of new technology and competitive products
  • Perform hands-on vehicle work to support system development
  • Lead system-level investigation across various functions/interfaces (powertrain, electrical, calibration, controls, fuel system hardware) to resolve complex issues, including recommending alterations to development and design to improve quality of systems and vehicle performance.
  • Support Fuel Subsystem technical Peer Reviews to ensure Best Practices, past lessons learned, and new System Engineering requirements are implemented on new/existing programs.
  • Travel as required (potential for occasional hot or cold weather test trips)


Additional Description
Required Skills / Experience / Education:

  • Bachelor of Science with a STEM focus
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual or difficult
  • Experience with engineering operations, processes, and best practices
  • 5+ years of post-graduation engineering experience required
  • 4+ years of experience in fuel systems hardware, controls, and/or diagnostics development.
  • In-depth knowledge of fuel system hardware, controls, diagnostics, and failure modes.
  • Understand fuel system development, verification, validation and vehicle development processes.
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a daily basis.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% (potential for hot or cold weather test trips if needed)


Preferred Skills / Qualifications / Education:

  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
  • Experience with multiple cycles of Vehicle Development Process within area of responsibility.
  • Fuel System Design Release Engineer experience
  • SAFe Certified
