Advanced Battery Thermal Engineer
Description
Advanced Battery Engineering at General Motors is a rapidly developing automotive technology organization. We're creating cutting-edge battery systems that provide industry leading performance for future Electric Vehicles. Our team is critical to achieving GM's vision of Zero Emissions, Zero Crashes, and Zero Congestion.
In this role you will be responsible for developing new battery thermal technologies and implementing your learnings into initial hardware designs. After assessing your designs for performance capability, they are transferred to the engineering execution team for component sourcing and vehicle launch. You will engage regularly with battery and thermal system architects, as well as engineers responsible for design of battery module, electrical, and structure components. We're seeking an engineer who works collaboratively with others and is comfortable with ambiguity.
Responsibilities:
- Be committed to safety in everything our team does.
- Promote an inclusive team environment that values backgrounds, opinions, and ideas that may be different from your own.
- During the advanced Balance Architecture (BA) phase of your assigned program, develop a battery thermal design solution with supporting analyses confirming performance status vs requirements. Assess this design vs targets for packaging, mass, cost, manufacturability, and other attributes.
- Lead the advanced thermal PDT (product development team) meeting for your assigned program, defining development work priorities and tracking design and analysis status.
- Partner with the Virtual Design, Development, & Validation (VDDV) team to utilize 1D analysis and 3D CFD tools to assess performance of various battery thermal designs.
- Ensure requirements and hardware design align with customer expectations by collaborating with engineers from vehicle thermal systems, battery systems, battery module, and battery cell teams.
- Support advanced battery electrical and structure engineers with thermal assessments of these components.
- Support vehicle and propulsion teams with status reports for intended battery thermal designs, and to discuss technical trade-offs vs alternate design options.
- Work with Battery Thermal Technical Specialists to ensure components align with internal Bill of Design/Materials/Process (BoD/BoM/BoP) strategies.
- After completing the advanced BA phase, provide consulting support to the engineering execution team as they source and launch your design into production.
- For new concepts and ideas, establish fundamental learnings and develop designs through advanced technology projects (ATW).
- Establish relationships with key suppliers and engage on development projects through Statement of Development Work (SODW) agreements.
- Continuously benchmark automotive and other industries to identify and implement innovative technologies for electric vehicles.
- Protect intellectual property (IP) by documenting your new ideas for invention board review and subsequent patent submissions.
