Engineer

IHC SA is currently seeking to secure the services of a Mechanical Design Engineer in our Cape Town office. The Mechanical Design Engineer’s primary responsibility is the engineering design of bespoke mining equipment solutions and installations. The Mechanical Design Engineer will be working within a design team to deliver the required project outcomes and achieve Customer satisfaction, within specified time, cost and quality constraints associated with projects allocated to him/her. In this regard, innovation and sound thinking based on experience are required. An accomplished skill level in 3D and 2D draughting is essential with a good understanding of strength of materials.

You will be responsible for:

• Assist with the compilation of tenders/quotations/proposals;
• Carry out the development of specifications and reports including design basis documents, functional and technical specifications and design reports;
• Carry out calculations and FEM analyses;
• Carry out and participate in concept identification, development and trade-off processes;
• Carry out basic design and modelling activities;
• Carry out detail design process;
• Participate in the planning and execution of Design Reviews;
• Provide engineering support and assistance to the project team during project fabrication, implementation and commissioning;
• Develop and manage project risks and mitigation plans as approved by the Project Manager;
• Conduct checking of own work as well as those of others;
• Ensure compliance with relevant rules and regulations, including Class Society and SHEQ; and
• Ensure compliance with the configuration management system.

To be eligible for this role, you must have/be/be able to:

• B-Tech / B. Sc / B. Eng degree in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering;
• Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA;
• Knowledge base and experience within the Mining, Oil and Gas, Mineral Processing or Heavy Engineering sectors;
• >5 years technical design experience;
• Proven verbal and written communication skills;
• Good organisational skills;
• Ability to perform under pressure;
• High attention to detail;
• Willingness to work demanding schedule and flexible hours, including after hours, in order to meet the required schedule;
• Willingness to travel;
• Operate as part of a team;
• Disciplined – work with limited supervision;
• Self-motivated, organized and results driven;
• Computer literacy (Word, Excel, MS Project.);
• Computer Aided Design literacy (AutoCAD / Solidworks / Inventor); and
• Own transportation.
