About the Role
As an Automation Software Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, programming, testing, and commissioning automation solutions for Valmet's world-leading tissue production machinery. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will contribute throughout the project lifecycle, from system design and software development to factory testing, commissioning, and customer start-ups.
This role offers the opportunity to work with advanced PLC and DCS platforms, develop innovative automation solutions, and support projects delivered to customers worldwide. You will play a key role in ensuring reliable, safe, and high-performance machine operation while contributing to the continuous development of our products and technologies.
The position includes occasional international travel to support commissioning activities and customer installations across the globe (3–6 weeks at a time).
Your Main Responsibilities:
Programming and development of automation logic
Design, programming, and validation of safety systems
Machine checkout, commissioning, and FAT (Factory Acceptance Tests)
Participation in development of new technology (R&D)
Responsibility for project budgets and schedules
Electrical design
Active participation in continuous improvement of methods and processes
Desirable skills and experience
4-10 years of experience in industrial automation with background in Electrical and Automation discipline.
Experience from process industry, with exposure to Tissue or paper manufacturing considered highly advantageous.
Solid hands-on experience with PLC and/or DCS systems, including programming, configuration, testing and commissioning.
Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in industrial environments. With knowledge in disciplines electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic.
Experience working with industrial automation systems, machine control systems, and production equipment.
Good understanding of industrial communication networks and integrated control systems.
Experience with machinery safety concepts, safety circuits, and Safety PLCs, including Pilz Safety PLC systems.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within cross-functional and international teams.
Excellent and fluent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
Willingness to travel internationally for commissioning, start-up, and customer support activities. 3-6 weeks at the time.
Hands-on experience with Valmet DNA automation system
Hands-on experience with Siemens, Rockwell, ABB or other leading PLC/DCS platforms.
Hands-on experience of troubleshooting electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
Experience with safety standards and Pilz Safety PLC programming
Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, or OPC UA.
Experience supporting commissioning and startup activities at customer sites.
Basic requirements of the position
Bachelor's degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering
4-10 years of relevant experience in industrial automation and control systems engineering.

Skills Required
