This position is responsible for all levels of engineering and/or analytical tasks and activities associated with areas within their assigned functions (e.g. UNIX, Windows, Network Management, Middleware, Mainframe, with the majority of time spent on strategic direction and leading design, development and analysis activities. Defines and performs complex tasks relating to assigned areas including small to large projects, software and hardware installation and configuration, problem resolution and performance tuning. Viewed as the “technical expert” for applicable technical platforms. Leads the implementation of related architectures and new technologies. Leads or participates in the identification and resolution of hardware and software technical problems. Leads and partners with others to perform throughput analysis, problem solving, and infrastructure planning. Identifies troublesome trends as they develop. Contributes to providing a stable environment for the enterprise system. Leads or participates in various ITS projects intended to continually improve infrastructure availability and performance. Works with other ITS groups to ensure solid cross-functional decisions are made as a team. Participates, recommends and approves decisions related to assigned technical area.

What You'll be Doing:

  • Leads or assists in designs for assigned technologies based on direction set by strategy, architecture and customers. Implements identified solutions, making suggestions to ensuring a cost-effective and efficient infrastructure environment to provide the resources essential to enterprise operations.
  • Significant experience level with and able to independently install and maintain associated hardware, as applicable. Troubleshoots, maintains, upgrades and provides solutions to hardware/software problems. Alerts management, help desk team and other IT groups when issues or problems arise. Minimizes client productivity loss caused by technology outages and provide necessary infrastructure for clients to meet their business needs.
  • Performs complex tasks that are typically limited to or dependent upon a senior-level technical expert.
  • Monitors and controls infrastructure performance in the areas of response, throughput and availability.
  • Leads or aids in locating the necessary tools and processes to identify troublesome trends. Understands and interprets identified trends and plans designed to resolve problems and prevent them from recurring. Maintains high service levels for the user community. Has familiarity with the method used to easily compare installation performance against established performance objectives.
  • Ensures a stable environment for enterprise systems.
  • Keeps aware of system problems that occur in corporate network, identifying and solving problems as rapidly as possible. Provides critical and essential services to locations enterprise-wide.
  • Leads or assists in the implementation of test plans including functionality, integrity and stress testing.
  • Leads and/or participates in various IT projects intended to continually improve the IT infrastructure such as evaluation of new software and hardware required to meet a business need or to make a process more cost effective.
  • Reviews assigned service requests daily and follows up and provides status updates to clients. Ensures data pertaining to the status of service requests is entered into help desk problem tracking systems accurately and promptly on a daily basis to provide an up-to-date picture of service delivery status and backlog.
  • Identifies frequently, opportunities for improving service efficiency and effectiveness. Participates in IT initiatives to address service issues. Keeps abreast of technical aspects of the computing environment. Develops a working knowledge of department specific applications. Attends seminars and other educational opportunities, seeks out insight and on-the-job training from other senior engineers and other internal and external resources.
  • Researches and keeps current on existing and emerging technologies.
  • Helps configure, install, and maintain necessary services for assigned technologies to provide a suitable environment to run production applications and to perform development. Assists in performing maintenance and release upgrades on a timely basis or as needed. Monitors performance and availability of communications platforms.
  • Leads or participates in tool and vendor evaluations.
  • Acts as internal consultant to other ITS groups on applicable technologies.
  • Strives continuously to improve client support and identifies opportunities and recommends solutions for improving service efficiency and effectiveness while developing a working knowledge of department specific applications.
  • Provides project management responsibility for assigned projects, including creating schedules, accepting tasks and ensuring projects are completed on time and on budget.
  • Deploys strategic plans and quickly identifies key success factors. Sets priorities to achieve unit, division and corporate goals.
  • Works on multiple technical projects. Develops and maintains comprehensive project plans/schedules and use these to provide management with accurate and complete status information.
  • Carries out field operations (all Meijer locations) as required.
  • Performs activities in accordance with standards, guidelines and processes.
  • Provides planning support for multiple technical projects including program-level activities.
  • Understands help desk policies/procedures and acts as a liaison to Help Desk staff.
  • Establishes and maintains a high level of user trust and confidence in the group's knowledge of and concern for users' business needs.
  • Mentors junior team members on same or other teams as appropriate.

What You Bring with You (Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Telecommunications or other related discipline.
  • 7+ years of related experience in ITS infrastructure or engineering environments developing, implementing and supporting similar technologies and services.
  • 7+ years of related experience in technical services for hardware/software engineering and production support of the areas of responsibility listed above.
  • Multiple certifications related to assigned area(s) of technology a plus.
  • Ability and experience to understand and assist in solving cross-functional problems that span multiple areas of technology.
  • Significant experience with small to large projects in a cross functional environment.
  • Experience in multi-platform environments.
  • A proven track record of project management capability for all sized projects, utilizing a project methodology through all lifecycle phases in accordance with established direction and standards.
  • Superior understanding of distributed systems architecture and advanced knowledge of multiple technical disciplines including PC workstations (configuration and connectivity), network file servers, applicable software and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Possesses the highest level of technical knowledge and aptitude in assigned technologies, able to independently work on, support and lead other technical resources in supporting these technologies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a broad base of end users.
  • Strong technical and non-technical communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills to ensure credibility with various leaders and stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively adapt to rapidly changing technology and apply it to business needs.
  • Solid understanding of the enterprise business and business processes; awareness of business unit functions and cross-group dependencies/relationships.
  • Ability to identify user requirements and aid in problem resolution.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Excellent judgment and analytical skills; as well as follow up and organizational skills.
  • General knowledge of vendor services for assigned technologies (e.g. network services, operating systems).
  • Superior knowledge of the following as applicable to assigned area and team: Desktop: Windows Client OS, Sharepoint, Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft Explorer; Client/server: Windows Server OS, RS/6000, AIX, UNIX, zOS, Internet, Intranet, Client/Server and web-based application development; WAN/LAN management suites; Other: various network management and performance monitoring/analysis tools.
  • Broad range of telecommunications and network knowledge is desired, including from among the following: Telecommunications: PBX, voice mail, VOIP, unified communications/messaging and peripheral devices; Network: Routers, MPLS, and wireless.
