As an Electrical Engineer III, you will serve as an experienced technical contributor and help shape engineering decisions through sound technical judgment, hands-on problem solving, and collaboration with teams across the organization.

You’ll work closely with firmware, software, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, repair, and product management to develop reliable products that serve real-world customer needs in the gas utility market.

What You'll DoElectronics & Embedded Systems
  • Develop embedded and real-time systems using C, C++, Python, and/or MATLAB.
  • Apply electrical engineering principles across analog, digital, power, and embedded firmware systems.
  • Design and support low-power electronics for portable, handheld instruments, including wired and wireless connectivity.
  • Lead or contribute to electronics architecture and design, including schematics, PCB layouts, board bring-up, design reviews, and product release support.
  • Guide local and remote PCB designers by establishing clear layout requirements and constraints, including:
    • Board stack-up
    • Component placement
    • Grounding
    • Power routing
    • High-speed routing
    • Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
Firmware, Software & Simulation
  • Develop and troubleshoot embedded firmware and real-time systems.
  • Work within modern engineering development processes using tools such as GitHub, Jira, and Visual Studio.
  • Implement power converter and control system simulations using tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and PSpice.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, firmware, and system-level problems using a structured, root-cause approach.
Product Development & Problem Solving
  • Evaluate design tradeoffs involving cost, performance, reliability, manufacturability, and schedule.
  • Translate customer and field needs into engineering requirements and practical technical solutions.
  • Evaluate prototypes and designs and recommend improvements.
  • Support product development through key phases including:
    • Hardware requirements definition
    • Research and development design
    • Verification and validation
    • Test planning and execution
    • Manufacturing design transfer
    • Product release and sustaining engineering
  • Identify opportunities to incorporate new components and emerging technologies to improve product cost, performance, size, reliability, and capability.
Collaboration & Technical Leadership
  • Serve as a technical resource and contribute to architecture and design decisions.
  • Communicate technical information clearly with engineering and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Work with outside suppliers and manufacturers on system- and project-level activities.
  • Coach and mentor less-experienced engineers and technicians throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to resolve technical challenges and support successful product outcomes.
Compliance & Industry Standards
  • Apply applicable standards, regulations, and engineering guidance related to the development and manufacture of products for the natural gas utility market.
  • Consider relevant safety, environmental, wireless, and international compliance requirements throughout product development.
What We're Looking ForRequired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 4–7 years of experience in an R&D, manufacturing, or engineering environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in embedded electronics, instrumentation, sensing, or related product development.
  • Proficiency with electrical CAD tools such as Altium.
  • Experience developing or supporting embedded systems and electronics.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to create clear, professional technical documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, product management, and other cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with experience in the following areas are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Microprocessor firmware development using platforms such as PIC, AVR, or ARM.
  • Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) development.
  • FPGA or RTL coding, particularly for timing control, sensor interfaces, or signal processing.
  • Intrinsic Safety design.
  • Optical sensors, transducers, infrared (IR), or similar sensing technologies.
  • Hands-on use of laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, power supplies, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Product development from requirements through design, verification/validation, and manufacturing transfer.
  • Portable instrumentation or gas-sensing technologies.
  • Knowledge of emerging electronic components and technologies relevant to gas sensing and portable instrumentation.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring engineers and/or technicians.
Why This Role Matters

The products you help design and improve are used in the natural gas utility industry, where reliability, accuracy, safety, and performance matter. This role gives you the opportunity to work on products that move beyond the design lab and into real-world applications.

What We Do

Since 1933 Heath has led the industry in the safety of natural gas utilities infrastructure through the innovative and conscientious actions of our employees. Our continued field services growth is due in large part to the addition of new field services, meter and corrosion services to our utility partners outside of our core emissions reduction focus. Heath’s innovative products have led to safer survey practices for both gas utilities and within our own field services division. These breakthroughs in technology are due in large part to the efforts of our engineering and marketing experts who research and develop new products and services through strategic partnerships with well recognized research and development organizations and industry trade associations. Heath is certified as a women’s business enterprise by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation’s largest third-party certifier of the businesses owned and operated by women in the U.S. Heath relies on these values to deliver superior products and service to communities across the globe.
