Position Title:  ENGINEER III – CUSTOMER QUALITY

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE ENGINEER III – CUSTOMER QUALITY 

  • Maintain strong customer relationships by independently representing the organization in customer meetings and effectively utilizing customer portals to obtain and share quality‑related information.
  • Drive improvements in customer satisfaction by proactively reducing quality claims, remakes, scrap, and deviations from standard work.
  • Interpret, clarify, and communicate customer requirements from Purchase Orders, technical specifications, and related documentation, ensuring proper flow‑down to internal stakeholders.
  • Review and disposition change requests that may impact customers.
  • Actively participate in and support Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activities, contributing technical expertise and ensuring alignment with customer and AS9100 requirements.
  • Prepare, maintain, and submit customer‑required quality documentation, including Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), Validated Assessment Process (VAP), Control Plans, Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ) documents.
  • Develop and maintain Control Plans and Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEA), establishing Critical to Quality (CTQ), Key Characteristics (KCs), including Product and Process Characteristics.
  • Perform and document First Article Inspections (FAIs) in accordance with AS9102 and customer‑specific requirements, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Lead 8D root‑cause investigations of moderate to high complexity, providing professional communication of findings and corrective actions to customers and ensuring timely closure.
  • Improve and stabilize manufacturing processes by implementing process controls (SPC), assessing process capability, and applying appropriate statistical methods.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in inspection, measurement, and sampling methodologies, and lead Measurement System Analysis (MSA) improvements across assigned processes.
  • Maintain qualifications and meet customer‑specific Supplier Quality Representative (SQR) requirements when applicable.
  • Develop and deliver training on customer‑specific quality requirements to internal teams, ensuring proper understanding and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Quality Systems to ensure customer requirements are fully integrated into internal processes and procedures.
  • Provide guidance in developing customer‑focused product audit plans.
  • Facilitate and participate in customer audits and external/3rd‑party audits/assessments as required.
  • Serve as a member of the internal audit team to support system compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain a central Quality records database and ensures integrity of the data and data accessibility.
  • Proactively improve process and product quality at Carpenter. Work with a “continuous improvement” mindset within the framework of outlined methods in the most efficient manner so that accurate and precise results will be consistently obtained and suggest possible modifications of procedures to improve the quality.
  • Follow and promote the use of safe working practices.  Sets an example for other Quality personnel to follow related to safety, policies and procedures.
  • May be expected to lead small sub-teams.
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED FOR THE ENGINEER III – CUSTOMER QUALITY    

  • Four‑year degree in engineering, metallurgy, chemistry, or related technical field required.  Advanced quality certifications (e.g., CQE, CQA, Six Sigma Green Belt) preferred but not required.
  • Five or more years of relevant experience or equivalent in a quality role within manufacturing, preferably as a quality engineer in the aerospace industry.
  • Experience working with customer quality requirements, audits, root‑cause analysis, and AS9100 processes. 
  • Prior aerospace, defense, medical device, or other highly regulated industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of AS9100 and customer-specific aerospace standards; familiarity with ISO9001, IATF16949, ISO13485, Nadcap, NQA-1, and/or 10 CFR 21 Appendix B.
  • Deep understanding of quality management system elements; capable of ensuring compliance across departments.
  • Proficient in internal auditing; able to lead major portions of audits and guide others, and in 8D, root cause analysis, and corrective action planning for complex issues.
  • Solid understanding of SPC concepts and ability to apply capability and control charting.
  • Working knowledge of heat treatment processes and their impact on product quality, and of metrology tools, gauges, and measurement best practices.
  • Understands broader business issues (customer requirements, production constraints, cost drivers) and uses this knowledge to guide decisions within the Quality function.
  • Provides input on best practices and helps optimize processes across the department.
  • Leads medium-scale projects or cross-functional quality initiatives, coordinating tasks, timelines, and resources.
  • Identifies resource needs and ensures project execution aligns with organizational priorities.
  • Understands cost impacts of quality decisions and helps track project-level costs; contributes to cost reduction efforts.
  • Expected travel is 5 %, including international travel.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willing to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.
