Job Description:

The Role
Microchip Technology Inc. is looking for an Engineer II-Applications (Hardware & Systems) in San Jose, CA. The successful candidate will be working closely with the product development, validation, marketing, and sales teams to provide world-class technical customer support for the Datacenter and Server channel products. This will include assisting in design wins, supporting customer product ramp up & production, triage complex systems issues, and working with development teams to resolve issues in a timely manner. These activities require the ability to work and gather information across functional groups, external customers, and product programs to determine the optimal solutions for our North American and International customers. This role is structured for an engineer who takes ownership—demonstrating self-initiative, fully understanding each task, asking questions when in doubt, and exploring new initiatives that benefit the team and organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support SAS/SATA/NVMe protocol, RAID controller embedded firmware, OS drivers, and management software for assigned products
- Support PCIe, security, and encryption technologies
- Support Tier 1 OEM/ODM and channel engagements—assisting with design wins, deliverables, and system bring-up—with increasing independence
- Work closely with channel customers, ECO System partners, and distribution
- Set up and maintain the system compatibility and debug lab
- Maintain the knowledge base & issue-tracking database
- Perform board-level debug, minor reworks, scripting, and code updates
- Take ownership of assigned tasks—showing self-initiative, fully understanding the requirements, asking questions when in doubt, and exploring improvements that benefit the team and organization—while working independently and within a team
- Root cause and document customer issues in a timely manner, contributing to and progressively leading cross-functional investigations
- Develop and review customer-level documentation including user guides, release notes, technical product training, and application notes
- Understand customer requirements and help drive them through the project management process
- Provide training as needed to end customers, MCHP FAEs, and MCHP sales
- Travel within North America and internationally, as needed, to work at trade shows, customer sites to debug firmware and software
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Developing technical leadership with strong teamwork
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with customer facing experience and presentation skills
- Ability to effectively work with cross-functional teams and across multiple geographical locations
- Customer facing experience (Tier 1 a plus) and ability to understand requirements and help drive them through the project management process
- Provide training as needed to end customers, Microchip Applications and FAEs
- Provide customer and field engineer support as needed
- Must demonstrate initiative and ownership, be self-motivated, and ask questions when in doubt to fully understand the task
- Independent but also works well within the cross functional teams across multiple geographical locations
- Creative with attention to detail

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering
- 2.5+ years of directly related experience in a similar Applications or hardware customer-support role (or equivalent)
- Working knowledge of SAS/SATA, SCSI, PCIe/CXL, NVMe and other storage related technologies.
- Experience with board-level debug
- Experience with board schematics & layout review
- Proficient programming skills in Python and C/C++, with TCL/TK or other scripting language
- Experience with bench top equipment such as protocol analyzers/exercisers, logic analyzers, and other storage or networking related test equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with RISC, MIPS, ARM based embedded processors
- Experience with storage accelerators
- Experience with AI/ML, deep learning, and natural language processing
- Experience working with Marketing and Sales teams
- Understanding of server BIOS functionality and device drivers

The annual base salary range for this position, which could be performed in the US, is $70,304 - $143,000.**Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
