The Engineer I position in the Division 2 Design Construction (DDC) Unit is responsible for assisting with the preparation of preliminary highway designs, final construction plans, technical reports, and cost estimates for division projects. The selected candidate will utilize design software such as MicroStation, GEOPAK, and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) to draft and develop detailed engineering plans.
This position will also support the DDC Engineer and engineering staff in developing conceptual drawings, cost estimates, and scopes of work. Duties include creating horizontal and vertical alignments, processing raw survey data, developing digital terrain models (DTMs), performing earthwork and engineering calculations, and assisting with corridor modeling. The Engineer I will produce right-of-way, erosion control, utility, hydraulic, traffic control, pavement marking, and roadway plan sets in accordance with NCDOT policy manuals, standards and specifications.
Engineer I will resolve minor to moderate design issues by identifying possible solutions and consulting with the DDC Engineer and Assistant DDC Engineer with minimal supervision. Monitors and manages project deliverables and milestones to maintain project let schedule. The position requires regular coordination and communication with other internal units, project teams, and external stakeholders.
Preferred qualifications include experience in surveying, such as taking field notes, collecting and processing survey data, and preparing routine reports. The position will support DDC staff with surveying activities, including data collection, deed research, and construction stakeout. Additional duties may be assigned by Division Management as needed.

Salary Grade: NC16 and Salary Range: $57,983 - $101,470
- General knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
- Demonstrated ability to learn and utilize various applications associated with the gathering of data and production of documents & technical reports
- Experience with software such as Microsoft Office
- Working knowledge of NCDOT’s programs, policies and standard procedures
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements:
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
