The Opportunity
This position works out of our Burlington, MA location in the Heart Failure Division. In Abbott’s Heart Failure (HF) business, we’re developing solutions to diagnose, monitor and manage heart failure, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives.
Our Heart Failure R&D team is seeking a Mechanical Engineer I to support the development of Mechanical Circulatory Support devices, specifically Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs). This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career engineer to contribute to life-saving technologies while gaining hands-on experience in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.
You will work under the guidance of senior engineers to design, analyze, prototype, and test implantable Class III devices, supporting activities across the product development lifecycle.
What You’ll Work On
Assist in the design and development of mechanical components and subsystems for LVADs using CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks).
Support simulation and analysis efforts (e.g., FEA, CFD) to evaluate design performance and reliability.
Execute test protocols and assist in the development of custom test fixtures and methods.
Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and documentation efforts including engineering reports and specifications.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including systems, electrical, software, clinical, and manufacturing engineering.
Interface with suppliers and internal teams to support prototype and production builds.
Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with regulatory and quality standards.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM field.
Internship, co-op, or academic project experience in mechanical design, preferably in a regulated industry.
Familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and basic simulation tools.
Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and problem-solving skills.
Effective communication and documentation skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and take initiative.
Preferred Qualifications
Exposure to medical device development or other regulated industries.
Familiarity with FDA regulations, ISO 13485, and design controls.
Experience with prototyping, testing, or lab-based engineering work.
Interest in cardiovascular technologies and implantable devices.
