Job Description

The Computational Engineering Division (CED) is seeking an Energy Systems Analyst Graduate Student Intern. The opening is for a graduate-level student who has received a bachelor’s or master’s degree who will be given the opportunity to engage in practical research to further their educational goals.

The intern will provide technical support for research on energy systems modeling, technoeconomic and lifecycle assessment, geospatial analysis, and network optimization. The work may address synthetic and biofuels, alternative feedstock utilization, hydrogen systems, and technology commercialization and scale-up.

This is a part-time internship requiring approximately 10 to 20 hours per week for 6 to 9 months.

In this role you will 

  • Conduct technoeconomic and lifecycle assessments of synthetic fuels, biofuels, alternative feedstock utilization, hydrogen production and transport, and related energy technologies.
  • Develop and apply geospatial analysis and network optimization using infrastructure, supply chain, market, and technology data.
  • Synthesize research findings to evaluate system configurations, technology scale-up potential, and deployment strategies.
  • Conduct research under limited direction and supervision.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and analysts in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Prepare technical summaries, presentations, visualizations, and other project deliverables.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). See Additional Information section below for details.
  • Must be a continuing student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a graduate degree or have completed a bachelor’s degree.
  • Ability to work part time, approximately 10 to 20 hours per week, for 6 to 9 months.
  • Academic or research experience in energy systems, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, economics, operations research, data science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience or coursework in one or more of the following: technoeconomic assessment, lifecycle assessment, geospatial analysis, network optimization, or energy systems modeling.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following: Python, MATLAB, R, Excel, GIS software, or optimization solvers.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage assignments, and collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • Excitement about working on challenging energy problems.

Pay

$10,215  Monthly

Please note that the pay is determined by California’s Computer Professional Exemption.

Security Clearance

None required.  However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process.  This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check.  

National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

The 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Section 3112, generally prohibits citizens of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea without dual US citizenship or legal permanent residence from accessing specific non-public areas of national security or nuclear weapons facilities.  The restrictions of NDAA Section 3112 apply to this position.  To be qualified for this position, Candidates must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112.

Pre-Employment Drug Test
