JOB SUMMARY

The Endoscopy Technician Specialist performing decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the DDEC, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process. Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff exhibiting teamwork characteristics. Maintains endoscopes and all accessories in working order and provides preventative maintenance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintains equipment and supplies to include:
    • Clean, disinfect, reprocess all endoscopes according to center policy and current manufacturer recommendations/instructions for use (IFU).
    • Clean, disinfect, sterilize endoscopic accessories between patients.
    • Operates and troubleshoots automatic endoscope reprocessors (AERs/DSDs) and other applicable endoscopy or patient monitoring equipment.
    • Anticipates and assists with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and endoscopic accessories.
    • Immediately report equipment malfunction or compromise to Center Director/Supply Coordinator and remove said equipment from use until resolved.
  • Responsible for all control parts of the sterilization process including decontamination, prep/pack/sterilize material, documentation of sterilization, and sterile storage.
  • Monitor surgery schedule daily, identifying general specific and potential needs for all cases.
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Operate and maintain steam autoclave, keeping records of loads completed and items in loads and maintenance procedures performed.
  • Observes universal precautions.
  • Refers situations beyond ability or function to Center Manager.
  • Must maintain patient right to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors family or patient.
  • Maintains HIPAA policy and Identity Theft Protection policy.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as directed by the Center Director or Physician which are within their legal limitations.
  • Keeps work area clean, neat and stocked.
  • Assists with answering the phone when necessary.
  • Informs nurse in charge when leaving for break, lunch, or for the day.
  • Knowledgeable of potential exposure to hazardous materials (i.e., patient body fluids, disinfectant chemicals.
  • Maintain flexibility and performs other duties as required.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement Program as directed.
  • Seeks educational opportunities and accepts responsibilities for own professional growth and development. Participates with in-service opportunities and staff meetings.
  • Completes required annual in-services and competency check-offs on time, assists with annual reprocessing competency check offs for staff.

  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate with one or more years of related work experience in endoscope reprocessing.
  • Certified Sterile Processing/Distribution Technician required.
  • Maintains current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • Membership of professional society encouraged.

  • Able to read, write and communicate.
  • Displays a primary interest in giving good patient care and maintaining standards of courtesy and friendliness to co-workers.
  • Able to maintain and comply with patient confidentiality policy on all matters.
  • Ability to determine appropriate course of action in more complex situations.
  • Ability to work independently exercise creativity and be attentive to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and prioritize scheduling of work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be able to stand for 8 to 10 hours a day.
  • Requires regular walking, bending, pushing, pulling and lifting.
  • Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to manipulate objects—reaching, grasping, handling.
  • Must exhibit good communication skills—understand, respond and translate into action.
  • Ability to delineate between numeric numbers.
  • Clinical setting; exposure to communicable diseases, chemicals, medical preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment.

Skills Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One or more years of related work experience in endoscope reprocessing
  • Certified Sterile Processing/Distribution Technician
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Experience cleaning, disinfecting, and reprocessing endoscopes per IFU and operating AERs/DSDs
  • Ability to operate and maintain steam autoclave and document sterilization records
  • Ability to stand 8 to 10 hours, regularly walk, bend, lift at least 30 lbs, and manipulate objects
  • Able to read, write, communicate, and maintain patient confidentiality (HIPAA)
  • Membership of professional society
