The Director of Labor Relations will work closely with company leadership to manage labor relations functions. This role will focus on contract negotiations, preparations with operations, and scheduling.  Union avoidance through engagement is a key strategic approach.  Administration of contracts, grievances and training are other key components of this home office role.  This individual will partner closely with legal services in managing labor and prevention strategies.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide direct support to all collective bargaining including representing the company as one of the spokespersons in labor negotiations in partnership with legal services.

  • Oversee the daily administration of collective bargaining agreements and work with HR and others on the leadership team.

  • Actively supports local HR, managers and supervisors in the investigation of grievances, including responding to RFIs with a focus on proactively resolving them internally.

  • Educate and guide local HR, managers and supervisors through the grievance process and partner with legal team on contract interpretation.

  • Educate local HR, managers and supervisors on the effects of work practices as well as actions that impact work practices.

  • Develop and maintain ongoing lists of management initiatives and proposals for future collective bargaining. Work to finance through operations to model potential financial outcomes in collective bargaining.

  • Develop and conduct union contract training in partnership with legal services to provide general labor relations training to local HR, supervisors and managers.

  • In partnership with legal services oversee campaigns and prevention training as needed and actively support such activities.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to company core values and HR goals.

  • Approve and coordinate specialized economic offers such as sign on and pick up bonuses.

  • Coordinate the maintenance of membership and dues lists.

  • Coordinate negotiated wage increases and budget implications.

  • Conduct quarterly labor relations updates for partners.

  • Ensures compliance with all state and federal employment regulations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATION

  • Bachelor's degree in human resource management, business or closely related field or equivalent combination of training and experience. Master's degree in human resource management, business or closely related field preferred.

  • Six years' experience in human resource management, five years of which must have been in a progressively more responsible labor relations position.

  • Experience in union election campaigns

  • Strong understanding of the national labor Relations Act and relevant state laws.

  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, organized and persuasive manner.

  • Ability to work independently and also perform as a strong team player.

  • Ability to build relationships with key stakeholders and anticipate business needed being situationally proactive.

  • Travel required.

  • Extensive knowledge of applicable state and federal employment and labor laws and governmental compliance requirements.

  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential preferred

Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resource management, business, or a closely related field, or equivalent training and experience
  • Six years of human resource management experience, including five years in progressively responsible labor relations positions
  • Experience in union election campaigns
  • Strong understanding of the National Labor Relations Act and relevant state laws
