Topic description
Embedded wireless networks are a fundamental part of contemporary IoT solutions. They are commonly responsible for collecting and forwarding diverse sensory data for cloud based IoT applications. Such networks are often based on standardized connectivity protocols such as ZigBee and BLE. Once these networks are properly installed and configured, issues may arise during operation for different reasons. Environmental factors may lead to unreliable connections, packet loss and unreachable devices. Incomplete device configuration as well as firmware updates and unexpected system scenarios may also cause feature malfunctions.
In the past, systematic evaluation frameworks have been developed that provide key performance indicators of wireless networks. Methods developed in such frameworks can closely identify poorly performing nodes. Yet, diagnosing the root-cause of such under performing nodes typically requires advanced tooling and physical presence of domain experts. A cost-effective alternative would be a remote diagnosis and troubleshooting approach that capitalizes on the potential of edge computing and utilizes the embedded intelligence of wireless sensor nodes. Locally collected and analysed diagnostic data can then be forwarded to a remote backend server for further investigation to provide new insights for future Quality-of-Service (QoS) improvements.
What you’ll do
-
Perform literature review on related works and identify key quality indicators of ZigBee/BLE networks.
-
Design an end-to-end framework for systematic diagnosis and troubleshooting of such networks.
-
Define requirements that consider constraints in wireless bandwidth and embedded system resources.
-
Propose any required manufacturer-specific protocol extensions (e.g. ZigBee clusters and BLE services)
-
Implement the proposed framework and demonstrate the functionality in real-life projects
Your qualifications
-
Final year Master student
-
Enrolled in engineering degree in Embedded Systems, Electronics, Computer Engineering or related subject for the duration of the internship
-
Passion in software development
-
All-rounded mentality and readiness to learn new skills and programming languages

What you’ll get in return…
You will be part of an embedded firmware scrum team that develops smart wireless devices, integrated with ZigBee/BLE radio stacks and a multitude of sensors. You will get mentorship from experienced developers and advance your knowledge in embedded RTOS, C/C++ programming, NUnit(C#), Test Automation, wireless connectivity and experience Scrum/Agile way of working.
We’re offering multiple opportunities for career development, like mentoring, coaching and stretch assignments, with strong international exposure for dynamic profiles. Learning is fundamental to our culture. Through continuous learning, we are transforming the industry. You have the chance to learn every day, acquire new skills and perspectives through customized online programs, and on-the-job experiences.
