NorthStar Memorial Group is seeking a dedicated Embalmer to join our Care Center team at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home in Decatur, IL. This is an opportunity for a professional who views embalming as both a technical discipline and a sacred art someone who finds purpose in restoring peace, preserving dignity, and supporting families through exceptional presentation and preparation.
What You’ll Do
- Perform embalming, disinfecting, dressing, preparing, and casketing of the deceased with precision, respect, and adherence to OSHA standards.
- Make removals and transfers from the place of death with professionalism, care, and attention to family needs.
- Initiate compassionate first contact to gather essential information and ensure a supportive experience from the very beginning.
- Uphold the highest level of care, ensuring families experience comfort and healing when seeing their loved one at rest.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing funeral service and preparation.

Illinois makes it straightforward for licensed Funeral Directors/Embalmers from other states to transfer their credentials. Most professionals already meet the requirements. You’ll simply submit:
- Your education records from your mortuary science program.
- Your National Board Exam verification
- Proof of one year of recent experience in funeral service.
- License certification from your current state.
For most candidates, this is a quick administrative process no additional schooling, no retesting, and no surprises. Illinois simply confirms what you’ve already accomplished.

- Current Illinois Funeral Director/Embalmer License or the ability to reciprocate
- 1+ years of funeral industry experience demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and technical skill.
We offer a salary of $55,000–$65,000/year, aligned with experience and technical skill. To support your transition, we provide a Sign-On Bonus OR Relocation Assistance for qualified candidates making it easier to join our team and continue your craft in Decatur.
