Research & Innovation (R&I), led by the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI), enables, and advances the University’s research priorities as well as research activities of Cornell colleges, schools, and research centers, institutes, and laboratories.

The Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) supports fundamental materials research and serves students, scientists, and researchers from Cornell and other academic, government, or industry researchers from around the world. This vibrant and active facility of shared instrumentation is overseen by expert facility staff who maintain instruments, train the next generation of materials researchers, and analyze samples as a service.


What You Will Do
Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as primary contact for CCMR Shared Facility instruments. Primary responsibilities may include oversight of scanning electron microscopes (SEM), transmission electron microscopes (TEM), surface analysis (XPS), Cryo-electron microscopy (CryoEM), or focused ion beam (FIB).
  • Train researchers to use instrumentation safely and properly, while maintaining instruments at a high level.
  • Perform analyses for off-campus users and compile research summary reports as needed.
  • Monitor records of equipment usage and maintenance for accounting, safety, and billing purposes.
  • Oversee operations within the facility and work with Center leadership to evaluate new and unique instrumentation that will meet needs of a variety of research groups. Procure and oversee installation of new instrumentation.

  • Masters degree or equivalent in Materials Science, a physical science, engineering, or similar discipline.
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience with electron microscopy and/or surface analysis techniques.
  • Applicants must possess a strong work ethic and self-motivation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.


What We Prefer

Additionally, we would prefer to see evidence of:

  • Ph. D. in Materials Science, a physical science, engineering, or similar discipline, or equivalent.
  • In depth understanding of electron microscopy techniques.
  • In depth understanding of surface analytical techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills.
  • Organizational and supervisory experience.
