The Role
Design and develop electro-mechanical products from requirements through detailed design, verification, documentation, and manufacturing release. Create SolidWorks models, drawings, BOMs, and specifications; manage engineering changes; support prototyping, testing, root-cause investigations, and continuous improvement. Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, sourcing, production, R&D, and marketing while ensuring compliance with applicable standards and optimizing products for manufacturability, cost, reliability, and serviceability.
Summary Generated by Built In

Support the Design Engineering Lead and wider R&D function by taking electro-mechanical product designs from requirements definition and investigation through detailed design, verification, documentation and manufacturing release. Apply strong electro-mechanical engineering principles to develop reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective products that meet customer, regulatory, and performance requirements.

The role requires a self-directed engineer who takes ownership of assigned work with appropriate autonomy for a mid-to-senior level engineer.

The role requires hands‑on CAD design using SolidWorks, active participation in engineering change control, and close collaboration with cross‑functional teams to support new product development (NPD), product maintenance, and continuous improvement activities.

Responsibilities

Key Duties:

Electro‑mechanical product design:

Carry out detailed design of electro-mechanical assemblies, integrating mechanical components, electrical equipment, wiring and cable harnesses.

Design and specify connectors, cable routing and interfaces between electrical and mechanical systems.

Apply appropriate design considerations for electrical segregation, shielding, thermal performance, assembly and serviceability

Create accurate SolidWorks 3D models, 2D drawings, BOMs, and specifications in accordance with internal standards and best practice.

Engineering change control:

Generate, manage, and implement Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), ensuring all design modifications are properly documented, evaluated, and released.

Prototyping and verification:

Support prototyping, testing and validation activities by analysing results, refining designs and independently investigating unfamiliar technical issues using available drawings, specifications, datasheets, standards and test evidence before seeking additional support.

Design for manufacturability & assembly:

Work with the Industrialisation and Manufacturing teams to ensure designs are optimised for production efficiency, quality, and cost.

Cross‑functional collaboration:

Engage with R&D, sourcing, quality, production, and marketing teams to ensure product designs align with project goals and business objectives.

Compliance and regulatory considerations:

Ensure product designs comply with relevant standards (e.g., CE, UKCA), directives, and internal design guidelines.

Technical documentation:

Produce and maintain accurate design documentation including drawings, specifications, tolerance stacks, test reports, PLM entries, and release artefacts.

Champion and embed engineering best practice within the electrical engineering team, drawing on previous industry experience to develop and continuously improve drawing standards, design checklists and release processes.

Problem‑solving and continuous improvement:

Investigate field issues, quality feedback, or electromechanical assembly failures, implementing corrective actions and supporting product lifecycle enhancement.

Job Competencies/Key Skills:

CAD proficiency:

  • Strong experience using SolidWorks for 3D modelling, assemblies, drawings, and design configuration management.

Electro‑mechanical engineering skills:

  • Solid grounding in electro-mechanical engineering principles, including materials, mechanical design, wiring/cable routing, thermal considerations and assembly principles.

Change management:

  • Good working knowledge of Engineering Change Control processes and PLM systems (e.g., ARAS, Windchill or Teamcenter).

Analytical and problem‑solving skills:

  • Ability to diagnose design issues using structured engineering methods, test data, and root-cause analysis.

Communication and teamwork:

  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating across departments and clearly presenting technical information.

Attention to detail:

  • High standards for accuracy, tolerancing, documentation quality, and compliance.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electromechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Proven hands-on experience in electro-mechanical product design within a manufacturing environment, including wiring/harness design, connectors, cable routing, production documentation, and taking designs through engineering change to manufacturing release.

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and familiarity with PLM and PDM systems.

  • Experience with Engineering Change Management processes.

  • Knowledge of relevant directives and standards (CE, UKCA, ISO, EMC, FCC etc.).

  • Experience applying EMC-aware cable routing, shielding and electrical segregation principles would be advantageous.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with Smartsheet is beneficial.
