The Senior E&I Design Lead provides technical direction and supervision for a dedicated team of designers. Operating with minimal supervision, you will oversee the delivery of high-quality electrical and instrumentation design packages on time and within budget. This role serves as a key bridge between the Electrical Engineering lead, Project Management, cross-discipline teams, procurement, and clients to ensure seamless project execution from scope definition through commissioning support.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Management: Provide technical direction and mentorship to the design team; optimize resource planning, estimate man-hours for future work, and foster professional growth. Implement and encourage company procedures and drafting standards. Great communication skills, both verbal and written.
Project Controls: Monitor project scope, cost, schedule, and quality; identify and document scope growth or changes and implement corrective actions.
Drawing & Detail Development: Develop and review comprehensive electrical specifications, single-lines, three-lines, cable and conduit schedules, control drawing schematics, wiring diagrams, interconnects, and complex 2D/3D layouts. Ability to understand PFDs, PFDs, mechanical and instrumentation data sheets. Create “plan” and “installation” drawings and sectional cut outs for cable entry / exit into electrical equipment and buildings.
Power Infrastructure Design: Design systems across low, medium, and high voltage spectrums (120V up to 230kV), including switchgear, prefabricated power distribution buildings, MCCs, VFDs, and power transformers. Design of UPS and DC power systems for backup systems.
Physical Layouts: Formulate routing plans and installation details for power, control, cable tray, conduit, grounding, and lighting systems.
Engineering Calculations: Perform and verify precise engineering calculations, including voltage drop, cable sizing, conduit/tray fill, panel loading, and lighting calculations.
Procurement Support: Assist with material take-offs (MTO), bills of materials (BOM), and cost estimation; evaluate vendor bids, review technical vendor documents, and integrate vendor data into project deliverables.
Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate closely with other project discipline leads, clients, document control, and field staff; resolve construction issues and provide on-site construction/commissioning assistance.
Public Utility Coordination: Engage and collaborate with the local public utility to design electrical power systems that will interface with new or existing high voltage transmission line or power substations to provide additional power to the project site. Integrate client controls with Public Utility monitoring to ensure the system is cohesive and meets the utility requirements.
Equipment Knowledge: Design experience with industrial type facilities, knowledge of motors, pumps, compressors, electrical heat trace systems, PLC, HMIs, DCS systems.
Protection and Coordination: Working knowledge of motor protection relays, overload selection / settings, and SEL programming and interface.
Construction and Commissioning: Provide “on-site” construction and commissioning assistance as required.
Education: Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting.
Certification: Not required at this level.
Experience: 15+ years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation drafting and design.
