About the role
Johnson Controls is hiring an Electrical Engineering Manager to lead our sustaining engineering team in Largo, Florida. You'll own the electrical design of commercial HVAC products our customers rely on every day, including Fan Coil Units, Terminal Units, and Air Handling Units.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll keep legacy products improving, deliver custom-engineered equipment for customers' special requests, and build a team known for technical excellence and a true One Team culture. You'll partner closely with the test lab, product management, sales, and operations to take designs from validation to the production floor.
What you'll do
Lead the engineering work
- Serve as the subject matter expert for electrical engineering principles across the product line
- Review special quote requests and oversee custom order design, hitting on-time delivery goals
- Own engineering change requests, design documentation, and approvals, prioritizing high-value changes with manufacturing, quality, and sales
- Write test plans, analyze results, and make data-driven design decisions with the test lab
- Oversee prototype and pre-production builds
- Ensure designs meet AHRI, ASHRAE, NEC, and UL standards
- Lead root cause analysis on field service claims
Drive improvement and innovation
- Lead continuous improvement to cut cycle time and raise product quality and performance
- Identify and deliver value analysis / value engineering (VAVE) projects
- Implement process improvements that reduce engineering defects and standardize workflows
- Introduce automation that shortens design time and eliminates manual steps
- Share technology and best practices with global engineering teams
Build and grow the team
- Create a positive, One Team culture across every business function
- Manage project resources, schedules, and budgets
- Hire, promote, and shape roles to keep the team staffed for success
- Set goals, run quarterly reviews, and lead talent reviews and development plans
- Create and deliver training on technical topics, design guides, safety, ethics and integrity, and onboarding
- Champion employee engagement and recognition
What you bring
Required
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university
- 7+ years of electrical design experience
- 3+ years leading an engineering team
- Strong problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to find practical answers when information is limited
- Clear written and verbal communication, from reports and work instructions to presentations for managers, customers, and cross-functional teams
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Preferred
- Experience with commercial HVAC equipment such as Fan Coil Units, Terminal Units, or Air Handling Units
- Working knowledge of AHRI, ASHRAE, NEC, and UL standards
- Proficiency with AutoCAD
HIRING SALARY RANGE: $90,000 - $135,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
