Orbion Space Technology is looking for an Electrical Engineer to join our team in Houghton, Michigan! The Engineer will work with Orbion’s electrical R&D team, contract manufacturing partners, manufacturing, and test engineering teams to support current products and develop state of the art electronics hardware for spacecraft electric propulsion systems. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive conceptual design, architecture trades, and requirements for the formulation of novel spacecraft electronics.
  • Create and support electrical designs throughout entire product lifecycle including part selection, schematic capture, board layout, manufacture, and test.
  • Collaborate with analysts to develop parts stress, thermal, radiation effects, and vibroacoustic analyses for your designs.
  • Drive the development, planning, and execution of risk-reduction, acceptance, and qualification test campaigns.
  • Create and review documentation (e.g. test plans, test procedures, work instructions, electrical schematics). 
  • Incorporate Design-for-Manufacture (DFM) or Design-For-Test (DFT) principles as you guide new designs through development, first article builds, and volume-production.
  •  Utilize manufacturing test data and trends to drive improved design requirements.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing on the development and procurement of special fixturing or test equipment to support manufacturing and test operations.
  • Lead product failure investigations in an integrated product team environment driving necessary changes to design, manufacturing, or test.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Must meet definition of a US Person
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar from an ABET accredited program.
  • 2+ years’ experience developing electronic hardware for space, aerospace, automotive, or similar high reliability applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with minimal supervision. 
  • Strong hands-on development experience with at least two of the following: analog circuit design (filters, amplifiers, etc.), digital/FPGA design, power electronics (switching converters, linear regulators, magnetics, etc.), or digital peripherals (memory arrays, ADCs, DACs, etc.). 
  • Demonstrated proficiency using PCB design software (e.g. Altium) and circuit simulation tools (e.g. SPICE). 
  • Proficiency with typical electrical test equipment – DMMs, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, loads, etc.  
  • Demonstrated hands-on electronics skills including soldering, rework, polymerics, or cable/harness fab.  
  • Familiarity with the electrical engineering product lifecycle, ranging from requirements development through parts selection, design, manufacture, test, and operations. 
  • Willingness to travel on occasion (10%). 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years’ experience developing electronic hardware for space, aerospace, automotive, or similar high-reliability applications. 
  • Experience with qualification and acceptance testing of electronics for extreme environments (e.g. TVAC, shock, vibe, etc.). 
  • Experience with space radiation effects on electronics. 
  • Experience with EMI/EMC design principles and testing (e.g. MIL-STD-461). 
  • Experience with EEE Parts & Reliability Engineering, which may include: high-reliability part selection, derating, up screening, reliability analysis, and familiarity with industry standards/best practices such as EEE-INST-002, MIL-HDBK-217, AEC-QXXX, etc. 
  • Familiarity with Design-For-Manufacture (DFM) or Design-For-Test (DFT) principles. 
  • Familiarity with NASA or IPC workmanship standards such as J-STD, 8739.X, or WHMA-A-620.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods of standing on concrete surfaces and at times, sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 40 pounds loads from floor level to chest level
  • Frequently move about office to access file cabinets, inventory, office machinery, etc. 
  • Manual dexterity to evaluate, install, and modify equipment 
  • Fine motor skills required for minute adjustments or counting small items
