About Atomic Machines

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler™ technology. This full-stack technology enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing for the many device classes frustrated by semiconductor methods and to open up entirely new product classes. The Matter Compiler™ technology fully realizes the digital manufacturing dream: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out.  The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter CompilerTM technology – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.

About The Role:

Atomic Machines is seeking an Electrical Engineer, Test to help build and scale the systems used to validate entirely new classes of devices. At Atomic Machines, we are developing a novel robotic manufacturing platform—the Matter Compiler™—that enables new materials and fabrication processes not possible in conventional manufacturing environments.
This role sits at the intersection of electrical engineering, software, instrumentation, and experimental development. You will work closely with senior engineers to design, build, automate, and debug custom test systems used for device characterization, reliability testing, and manufacturing validation.

Many of the systems we develop do not have established playbooks or known outcomes. Success in this role requires strong engineering fundamentals, curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to work through ambiguous technical problems across hardware and software boundaries.

You will contribute to the full lifecycle of test development, including instrumentation integration, PCB bring-up, firmware validation, automation software, data collection, and experimental debugging. Projects may involve custom electronics, microcontrollers, automation software, mechanical fixtures, high-voltage systems, or integrating commercial instrumentation into larger automated test environments.

This is a highly hands-on role ideal for engineers who enjoy building, troubleshooting, learning across disciplines, and working closely with physical hardware systems.

What You'll Do

  • Build, debug, and deploy custom test systems for device characterization and manufacturing validation
  • Develop and execute test plans from engineering specifications and experimental requirements
  • Integrate lab instrumentation, sensors, power systems, and microcontrollers into automated test setups
  • Develop automation and control software for instrumentation and data collection
  • Assist with PCB bring-up, firmware validation, and hardware debugging
  • Collect, analyze, and document test data to support engineering and manufacturing decisions
  • Troubleshoot electrical, firmware, software, and system integration issues in lab environments
  • Design and assemble test fixtures, wiring, and supporting hardware infrastructure
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Device, Manufacturing, and Production teams to define test requirements and improve reliability
  • Research instrumentation, components, and test approaches to support build-versus-buy decisions
  • Document test procedures, interfaces, and validation results to support reproducibility and production handoff

What You'll Need

  • 2–5 years of experience in test engineering, electrical engineering, embedded systems, instrumentation, or related hardware development roles
  • Experience working with electronics, instrumentation, or embedded hardware systems in a lab environment
  • Familiarity with analog and mixed-signal circuits, including common building blocks such as op-amps, filters, relays, and power devices
  • Experience using standard electronic lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies, and source meters
  • Experience writing software or scripts in Python, C, or C++ for automation, instrumentation, or embedded systems
  • Familiarity with instrumentation communication protocols and device integration
  • Experience with PCB debugging, hardware bring-up, soldering, and bench-level troubleshooting
  • Ability to work through ambiguous technical problems with persistence and attention to detail
  • Strong documentation and communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, or a related technical field

Bonus Points For

  • Experience developing automated test systems or manufacturing test infrastructure
  • Experience with microcontroller platforms such as STM32 or Arduino
  • Familiarity with Python-based test automation frameworks
  • Experience integrating commercial instrumentation into automated systems
  • Exposure to reliability, environmental, or high-voltage testing
  • Experience working in fast-paced R&D or hardware startup environments
  • Experience with PCB layout or simple board design

The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.

What We Do

Atomic Machines is redefining humanity’s relationship with matter. We see a future where our tools will allow us to reorganize matter at the atomic level at will, where we will go from bits to atoms for any object or machine that can be designed in alignment with physical laws. We have begun our journey with the development of a robotic manufacturing platform capable of making an entirely new class of micro-electromechanical (MEMS) devices. We are well funded and have exceptionally strong product/market fit and a clear go-to-market path for the device we will make first with our platform. Our platform breaks traditional manufacturing paradigms and constraints, enabling inexpensive rapid prototyping as well as large scale manufacturing with highly compelling economics. Joining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team working on a massive world-changing mission. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its early days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.
