Electrical Designer
Job Summary / Responsibilities:
Reports to: Senior Engineer and/or Office Director
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform calculations for circuit sizing, lighting levels, equipment sizing, building loads and similar analysis
- Design of:
- Lighting systems
- Lighting controls
- Receptacle layout and placement
- Lighting and power receptacle circuiting
- Branch circuit panel boards
- Fire alarm device placement
- Nurse call and specialty device placement
- Input design into Revit Model for above systems
- Coordinate with manufacturers for the above systems
- Maintenance and input of electrical Revit model including:
- Connectivity of systems
- Drawing notes
- Schedules
- Details
- Panel board load sheet automation
- Receive markups from senior staff and enter data into Revit
- Produce minor markups at times for corrections and design
- Self-evaluate drawings for corrections as needed prior to Senior Engineering or EOR Review.
- Coordinate with mechanical trade designers for design of power feeds to mechanical equipment
- Coordinate with Fire Protection designers for power feeds and fire alarm interface
- Communicate effectively with teammates for inter-trade design coordination
- Communicate effectively with senior staff and management for design process and schedule
- Communicate effectively with architects to coordinate locations of fixtures, devices, and equipment
- Visit project sites to gather information on existing conditions during the design phase
- Visit construction sites during construction phase to review and observe ongoing construction and resolve contractor questions
- Review contractor submittals and compare to design schedule and specifications
- Review contractor requests for information (RFI) and provide suggested responses based on knowledge of design intent
Qualifications and Experience:
- 2-4 years of Electrical Design work including working knowledge of electrical systems for commercial, healthcare, institutional, and/or industrial buildings
- Experience performing electrical calculations including circuit sizing, lighting levels, equipment sizing, and building load calculations
- Proficiency in Autodesk Revit for electrical design, including lighting, power, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems
- Ability to develop and maintain electrical models, including panel schedules, load calculations, details, and drawing notes
- Familiarity with lighting controls, receptacle layouts, branch circuiting, and panel board design
- Understanding of fire alarm systems, nurse call systems, and other specialty/low-voltage systems
- Ability to interpret and incorporate markups and direction from senior engineers and engineers of record (EOR)
- Experience coordinating electrical design with mechanical, fire protection, and architectural disciplines
- Knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards (NEC, NFPA, local building codes)
- Ability to review submittals and RFIs and provide input consistent with design intent
- Strong attention to detail and ability to self-check drawings prior to senior review
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordination with internal teams, architects, and contractors
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines in a fast-paced design environment
- Willingness to travel to project and construction sites as needed
Education
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant electrical design experience may be considered
Location: Bloomington, MN / Hybrid
Travel: Up to 10%
Compensation & Benefits:
The expected base salary range for this role is $75,000 - $85,000 USD per year. Actual compensation will be determined based on a number of factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location.
