Electrical and Controls Specialist

Key Areas of Responsibility

• Provide support for operational issues across all company operating sites.

• Assist with the enhancement of current maintenance and operation practices.

• Set up and review preventative maintenance tasks using the company's Maintenance Management Systems (MMS).

• Produce root cause analysis and failure analysis reports and assist with implementation of preventative action recommendations.

• Act as a technical consultant to all departments in the areas of reliability and maintenance, as it relates to electrical and controls systems.

• Able to review and understand electrical and controls engineering deliverables: Drawings (including single line diagrams and P&IDs), Calculations, Specifications, Data Sheets, Quotations, Scope of Work, Inspection & Test Plans, and Test Documents.

• Review and troubleshooting protection relays, kWh meters, power monitors, governors, and other ancillary programmable devices.

• Inspect and test customized electrical equipment.

• Safe isolation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of up to 15KV power systems.

• Diagnose problems within electrical generation units and control systems.

• Perform isolation and switching of Low Voltage and Medium Voltage switchgear, fused disconnects, and circuit breakers.

• SCADA networking and interface programming support and troubleshooting; manage PLC, I/O, HMI, and drive systems.

• Support generator systems including synchronization, relay protection, and control.

• Provide technical and cost estimating support.

• Maintain a high level of knowledge of electrical products and technologies.

• Ensure a safe workplace for staff and customers in accordance with the HSE Management Plan, including:

  • Reporting all risks, hazards, incidents, near misses, and accidents.

  • Removing or modifying any unsafe processes or systems.

  • Ensure specifications and drawings sufficiently describe scopes of work and protect the company's interest.

• Actively ensure own health and safety and the health and safety of others through understanding and implementing workplace health and safety obligations

• Support and comply with Company policies and procedures as advised and documented in the Company’s employment policies as amended from time to time and as directed by Managers/Supervisors

• In addition to the duties set out above, the Electrical Systems Technician may be expected to perform other duties as assigned from time to time by the Company

Person Specification

Technical Skills

• Electrical and controls knowledge, with mechanical aptitude and operational experience in both power generating and gas/chemical processing assets.
• Ability to develop and apply electrical/controls guides and standards.
• Knowledge of PLC programming, SCADA systems, and related programs.
• Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and experience in the collection and processing of system data.

Qualifications and Experience

• Trade qualifications with operational experience; Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering a plus
• Five or more years of professional industrial electrical troubleshooting and operational experience, preferably in the power, gas, or mining industries.
• An understanding of gas processing (Midstream, RNG) and power plant process equipment.
• Familiarity with generation operation including synchronization, relay protection, governor controls, and maintenance.
• Background with MMS systems and predictive maintenance.
• Knowledge of OSHA and NFPA 70E safety policies and procedures (e.g., lock out/tag out, high voltage electrical).
• Proficient in software and OEM programs such as Allen Bradley ControlLogix.
• Familiar with Ethernet IP protocols.
• Experience with wiring diagram development and redlining incorrect schematics.
• Ability to troubleshoot problems, identify root causes, and propose and implement remedies.
• Ability to perform calibrations, installation, and maintenance of process and analytical instrumentation.
• Ability to troubleshoot and re-wire electrical equipment such as AC/DC motors, VFDs, PLCs, and PLC I/O modules.
• Renewable Energy or Oil and Gas experience preferred.
• Must be available for after-hours as required.
• Must be able to travel to remote sites as required.
