Your Role: EKS Sustainability Program Analyst

Elanco Animal Health is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Sustainability Project Analyst with a strong focus on carbon program measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MMRV) to join our growing team. This critical role will contribute to both innovation/development of new programs and the operation of commercialized livestock (dairy and beef) sustainability programs. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of carbon programs, carbon markets, and emissions quantification and measurement strategies in agricultural projects. This role will require the candidate to be able to develop quantification tools that meet methodology requirements, translate methodology monitoring requirements into actionable plans to be operationalized, and contribute deep technical knowledge to carbon program design. This role requires a proactive individual who can work independently and collaboratively to address complex challenges and can provide quantification and MMRV expertise to the expansion of Elanco sustainability offerings.

Your Responsibilities:

Innovation (50%): Support the technical design and development of measurement, quantification, monitoring, reporting and verification components of new ruminant sustainability programs.

  • Quantification Tools and Measurement Application: Collaborate with Technical Consulting teams to build and maintain credible sustainability quantification approaches. Build quantification tools for use in programs. Support writing and documentation of quantification methodologies and SOPs as needed. Develop and refine data models to assess environmental impacts and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Methodologies and Standards Knowledge: Maintain and apply deep expertise in carbon programs, methodologies and standards, including various offset registries and scope 3 program opportunities for agricultural systems and/or super pollutants, Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Land Sector and Removals Standard and Guidance, and Science Based Targets Initiative Forest, Land, and Agriculture Guidance.
  • Quantification Approaches: Maintain knowledge and relationship with existing quantification approaches and models used in livestock systems (FARM ES, CoolFarm Tool). Experience and/or certification in product carbon footprint (PCF) or life cycle assessments (LCA) is a plus. Monitor and assess updates to key reference / source material and recommend update of tools as appropriate (e.g. IPCC, EPA, USDA, IDF, GRSB, relevant methodologies & industry guidance).
  • Monitoring: Leverage carbon program design and methodology knowledge to develop monitoring plans and partner with Elanco UpLook operations team to build requirements and feature roadmaps. Translate complex protocol requirements to operational build and implementation plans.
  • Reporting: Build reporting framework to ensure credible report delivery to producers and emission reduction buyers, partnering within the Elanco UpLook operations team to translate and build protocol requirements into operational reporting design features in UpLook. Work with dairy and beef commercial teams to ensure reporting meets producer needs while ensuring contractual and risk management (e.g. no double counting, inappropriate claiming).

Operations (50%): Support successful implementation of commercialized sustainability programs.

  • Feed & Feed Ingredient Emissions Quantification: Maintain feed ingredient mapping database for use in carbon programs. Manage relationship with LCA and ingredient database providers, including contracting and ensuring adherence to license agreement requirements. Manage custom ingredient quantification in collaboration with dairy, beef, and operations as needed.
  • Data Sources, Emissions Factors, LCA application: Maintain updated databases / source data required for program quantification. Ensure timely updates as new data are available and communicate updates proactively across stakeholder groups. Provide expertise and recommendations on best practices. Manage product carbon footprint or LCA engagements as needed.
  • Monitoring and Program Operations: Maintain and contribute to the continuous improvement of Elanco tools to execute modeling and calculations (e.g. in Excel,  existing UpLook platform) and monitoring. Work with operations team to advise on monitoring data, oversee critical QA/QC processes, and communicate findings across teams.  Support Monitoring Specialist with any exceptions or questions related to active monitoring processes. Contribute to continuous improvement of processes and producer experience for data collection. Conduct data analysis on program outcomes as needed to inform decisions and program evolution.
  • Asset Management: develop approach to managing delivered outcomes and claims to ensure appropriate delivery of outcomes to claiming entities with a focus on delivering contractual obligations and minimizing program risks.
  • Verification Engagement Management: Serve as clearing house for all 3rd party verification engagements, collaborating with operations and commercial teams to efficiently respond to findings. Support program documentation updates as necessary resulting from verification engagements, communicating updates across stakeholder groups.  

What You Need to Succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Education: BS in Environmental Science, Statistics, Economics, Animal Science, or a related field. Advanced Excel skills required.
  • Required Experience: 3+ years demonstrated knowledge of agricultural or super pollutant carbon program development, project implementation, tool management, and MMRV for successful issuance of program outcomes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Understanding of carbon markets and carbon project design
  • Fluency in English required; proficiency in other languages (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese) is a plus.

What You Need to Have a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • MS in Environmental Science, Statistics, Economics, Animal Science, or a related field5+ years of experience in sustainability, agriculture, research, or data analysis.
  • Experience performing advanced quantification for carbon programs, including land use change emissions, coding software, and/or uncertainty, leakage, or permanence analysis
  • Experience with co-benefit programs, nutrient management, water, biodiversity etc.
  • Experience with programs and projects in jurisdictions outside the United States, especially Mexico, Brazil, Canada, and / or New Zealand and Australia
  • Miscellaneous sustainability experience or expertise – such as greenhouse gas inventory development; environmental attribute certificates; international crediting schemes such as Article 6 or CORSIA; implementing traceability or chain of custody models.

Elanco currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from $82,600.00 to $137,600 depending partly on the successful candidate’s qualifications, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending partly on company and individual performance). Additionally, Elanco offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees that includes a company-matching 401(k); vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).
