Purpose:
The Environmental, Health & Safety Compliance Specialist is a major role within Interstate Batteries’ Compliance Team. This person is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring regulatory policies relevant to all business segments of the Interstate Batteries Enterprise. This role will also be vehicle for enhancing strategic partner relations by serving as a consultant to third parties on regulatory issues.
Responsibilities:
Field Assessments
- Visit company-owned business locations to observe field activities and assess compliance with company policies and regulatory standards
- Act independently to review and evaluate compliance issues/concerns within the Company; investigate and resolve as is appropriate
- Provide guidance to field managers and serve as de facto project manager to ensure the implementation of process improvements
Policy Development and Implementation
- Research federal, state and local regulatory laws related to Company business
- Plan and direct programs, policies, and practices to ensure all business segments operate in accordance with regulatory guidelines
- Plan and supervise regulatory testing activities
- Identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk; develop and implement corrective action plans for resolution of issues
- Consult with in-house counsel as needed to resolve difficult compliance issues
Training (15%)
- Identify training opportunities related to environmental, health and safety opportunities and concerns
- Assist in the development of training programs and modules that are responsive to the regulatory compliance needs of the Company
- Train home office and field team members as well as strategic partners on compliance requirements and Company best practices
Emergency Response
- Serve as a point-of-contact to field operations in the event of emergency compliance issue.
- Guide field managers through emergency response protocol as required by Company policy
- Report necessary information to the proper governmental agency, as necessary
Administrative
- Provide reports on a regular basis, and as directed or requested to keep Interstate leadership informed of all applicable operation and progress of compliance efforts.
- Ensure proper reporting of violations and potential violations to authorized enforcement agencies as appropriate and/or required.
Formal Education & Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree required and/or 4 years equivalent work experience
- Strong federal and/or state compliance background
Competencies:
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to environmental, health and safety
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent listening and interpersonal skills
- Attention to detail
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
- Ability to analyze and simplify complex problems
- Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
- Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
- Self-starter with the ability to contribute to the completion of projects and goals without direct supervision
- Ability to exercise sound judgment with defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action
- Ability to respond to sensitive information discreetly and to maintain confidentiality
Work Environment:
- Ability to sustain posture in a seated position for prolonged periods of time
- Regularly required to use hands to grasp or handle, and talk and hear
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move 20+ lbs.
- Travel required 50%
